College Football Odds: Boston College at Virginia Tech
Written October 8, 2009 by Hector Garza
#5 Virginia Tech takes on Boston College at home this Saturday at 12:00 p.m. EDT. The Hokies have made a strong case for the Coastal Championship, defeating 2 ranked teams and losing to #3 Alabama 24-34. Last year they lost 23-28 on the road, but got revenge when they forced four turnovers and scored a defensive touchdown in defeating the Eagles 30-12 in the ACC championship game. Both teams are 4-1, but looking at the latest college football odds for this game, Boston College is the noted underdog by 13 ½ points. The total is set at 44 ½ points.
The Hokies have been surprisingly one sided on offense, relying on their potent rushing attack rather than the arm of QB Tyrod Taylor. Before playing Duke, they were averaging 112.8 ypg in the air. The Blue Devils thought to crowd the box to stop the run, and the Hokies proceeded to pass for 327 yards passing and two td’s while still managing 150 yards on the ground in a 34-26 win. Most importantly, Thomas showed his versatility, going 17-22 with no interceptions.
Virginia Tech has given up 18 ppg and has allowed almost 140 ypg on the ground while giving up 200+ ypg in the air. Last week they were stingy on the run, but gave up over 300 yards in the air to the Blue Devils. They have forced 7 turnovers , but their saving grace has been special teams where punts, blocked punts and kickoffs have been returned for td’s.

Head Coach Frank Spaziani is 5-1 and has Boston College playing some inspired football. The Eagles pulled off a major upset last week at home, defeating Florida State 28-21. RB Montel Harris led the charge with 179 yards rushing and two td’s, and QB David Shinskie chipped in another 203 yards passing and two td’s in the win. The offense will need to improve on the turnovers, as last week alone they had 3 fumbles. The QB’s have also been susceptible, combining for 5 interceptions. If they want to continue the upset trend, they’ll need to take care of the ball this week against the Hokies.
Two weeks in a row Boston College has given up big leads at home, and the defense has been to blame. The stop unit has struggled against the run, despite the presence of LB Luke Kuechly who leads the team with 45 tackles. In two wins against Wake Forest and Florida State, the defense has given up over 450 ypg of offense. They’re a young unit looking to improve, and one highlight is that they have forced 10 turnovers in 5 contests against some quality opponents.
Virginia Tech will be looking for win #5 against a defense that’s given up their fair share of yardage. Boston College will be looking to neutralize the speed of Virginia Tech by keeping their offense off the field and controlling the game with a powerful running attack. Tech has home field advantage, but has shown they’re vulnerable to big plays as well. This game could be surprisingly close, and I can see Boston College playing them closer than 13 ½ points. Turnovers will be key.
