Baseball Picks: Atlanta Braves at Chicago Cubs

Written July 6, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz

braves-cubs-preview-070609The Atlanta Braves limp into Chicago to face the Cubbies after dropping two of three at Washington. At 39-42 they are four games behind NL East leading Phillies and three games behind second base Florida.. The main issue that Atlanta has is that they are around average in every aspect of the game. Chipper Jones is hitting .291 with nine homers and 40 RBIs. All-Star Brian McCann is hitting .304 with eight homers and 33 RBIs. Their best player is probably newly acquired CF Nate McLouth who has 13 homers, 48 RBIs but is hitting only .264 from the plate which won’t cut it as a lead off man. Yunel Escobar and Garret Anderson have both been solid but nothing spectacular. However, the guy on the mound though tonight has been just that, spectacular. Jair Jurrjens is 6-6 but posts a 2.73 ERA. His .500 record is due to the lack on run support he receives. His home/away numbers have been very comparable. Now, here comes the tricky statistic. His day record is 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA while his night record is 4-6 with a much better ERA of 2.50. That proves just how little his teammates have helped him from the plate during evening games. Flat out, Jurrjens has been a stud with no signs of faltering. Tonight though, he will face some troubles. Chicago has been needing a nice home stand to get themselves hot. Roughing up good pitcher might just do the trick.  Monday’s baseball odds are posted and they show the Cubs -110 against the Braves with the total set for 8.5 runs.

The Chicago Cubs are 40-39 and currently site 2.5 games behind the Cardinals for first place in the NL Central and 1.5 games behind the Brew Crew. Coming off a series victory against Milwaukee in which they took three of four, Chi Town is ready to make a serious push at this division. They have won back to back series’ after Manager Lou Piniella had to give them a swift kick in the rear end. Without a question Derrek Lee has been their best hitter, he has 15 home runs along with 51 RBIs on the year. Ever since Aramis Ramirez got injured the Cubs have been looking for guys to step up. Jake Fox seems to fit the bill. In 67 at bats, Fox has four homers and 15 RBIs while hitting .310 from the dish. Geovany Soto has been hitting better of late while Alfonso Soriano still is searching for his swing. On the mound tonight is 27 year old rookie Randy Wells who has been brilliant. Like his counter part Jurrjens, Wells also suffers from getting no run support. He has a 3-3 record with a 2.43 ERA. He is slightly better on the road then at home. Randy has a 3.09 home ERA and a 2.04 on the road. However, His ERA during night games is 1.91 as opposed to day starts where it is 3..00. Any which way you want to look at it he has been a tremendous success. In his only start against Atlanta he went seven innings allowing one run on only two hits as he held the Braves to a .087 batting average.. Oh boy do I love this game. Down below in my hot notes you’ll see why.

Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Braves are 3-10 in their last 13 Monday games. The Cubs are 7-1 in their last eight home games. Atlanta has an 18-21 road record while Chicago has one of the NLs best home records at 24-14. In the head to head area, The Cubs are 7-2 in the last nine meetings between the two. Expect the rookie to dazzle tonight as this is clearly BEST BET worthy and much deserving of putting my streak on the line.

Jordan’s Pick: Chicago Cubs -110 (BEST BET)

WHAMMY! This past Friday was a delicious double dip as we hit out BEST BET on the OVER 9 runs in the Tigers/Twins game as we also hit our UNDERDOG SPECIAL with the Tigers at +153. I hope everybody had a great July 4th weekend. I’m sure some good food was spread around and I hope spirits were high. This streak is not done, as a matter of fact it is just getting started. Make sure to ride this out with me. Comments are always welcome. I can not be stopped.
