Baseball Odds & Picks: Atlanta Braves at San Diego Padres
Written August 4, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The Atlanta Braves are scuffling after a promising acquisition of Adam LaRoche at the trade deadline to rejoin his former teammate Nate McLouth who was acquired a couple of months back. They have dropped five of their last seven games and have not done much hitting at all. With the exception of Yunel Escobar, this lineup has been digressing. Chipper Jones is hitting below .290 (which for him is below average), Brian McCann has been a no show over the past week while Nate McLouth continues to disappoint. They look to get back on track tonight against a young pitcher. For Atlanta, Javier Vazquez takes the mound and has been great this season. His record only shows an 8-7 performance, but that is due to the lack of run support he receives, he has a 3.01 ERA this season. Javier is undefeated since the all-star break and tonight will most certainly be impressive. Atlanta can not afford to lose two games in a row to one of baseballs worst team. They are attempting to stay in the NL wildcard hunt. Now, if the Braves hit tonight like they have over the past week it won’t matter what Vazquez does. I see the bats waking up tonight in an urgency game. Expect the Braves to play real well. Tuesday’s MLB odds show the Braves -153 at the Padres with the total set for just 7 runs.
The San Diego Padres are one of the most interesting teams in baseball. The team from America’s most beautiful city is ran by some of the more in adequate people in the business. Adrian Gonzalez, the highlight of this team, was actually in discussions to be traded. A player like that, you pay, you do not wave goodbye. Yet, San Diego is hitting well and pitching well recently. They are 6-1 in their last seven games overall. Kyle Blanks has been a gang buster over this stretch while Tony Gwynn Jr. has also showed signs of life. Of course, Adrian Gonzalez is the focus with his 28 home runs and 68 RBIs. So, while their lineup isn’t good, it has been serviceable…for now. The Padres send Tim Stauffer to hill tonight, he is 1-2 with a great 2.57 ERA this season. Considering he has only made four starts, any type of situational statistics to me are not valid just yet. he does face a team tonight who is due for a break out performance. The career minor leaguer (spot starter) in my eyes is walking into a bad situation here. Expect him to throw in a clunker tonight, he is due for one.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Braves are 18-6 in their last 24 meetings against the Padres. Atlanta has also won 8 of their last 11 games against the Padres in San Diego. As stated above, javier Vazquez is undefeated since the all-star break and tonight is way to important for Atlanta to falter. The Braves will win tonight easily as I expect them to put up 6-8 runs themselves. Picks below.
