Brees v. Roethlisberger Touchdown Passes

Written August 17, 2009 by Jack Jones

Roethlisberger Brees Passing TouchdownsIf you are a fan of either Drew Brees or Ben Roethlisberger then you may be intersted in a prop wager that BetUS sportsbook has listed.  For those of you who love NFL betting and want a season long side wager, you can bet on who is going to throw more touchdown passes this year, either Brees or Roethlisberger.  The NFL odds ont his little matchup has the New Orleans Saints quarterback as a 7.5 touchdown favorite over his Pittsburgh Steelers counterpart.  If you want to get in on the action, then make sure to take advantage of the $500 bonus BetUS gives our readers who deposit $500!

Taking a look at last year, Brees tied for the best in the NFL when he threw 34 TD passes.  Roethlisberger on the other hand ony managed to throw for 17.  Brees would have coverd this number in three of the past five seasons, and one of his losses was by a single touchdown.  He averaged 27.8 over the past five years to Big Ben’s 20.2.  In 2007 though, Roethlisberger threw for 32 touchdowns, which seems to be an outlier from the 17 or 18 he has thrown in every other season.

I also think the Steelers will play more of their same old style, running the ball down opponent’s throats with both Rashard Mendenhall and Willie Parker in the backfield and a stingy defense.  The Saints on the other hand are pass heavy and consistently rank near the bottom of the league in rush attempts.  You also have to consider the problems New Orleans has on defense, so the team knows they have to score a lot of points to stay in contention to win games.  With most of the offense on Brees’ shoulders and a high-powered attack I see Brees having yet another big year.

Another component to my analysis here is the division.  Late in the year the AFC North will be playing games in the cold and snow, while the NFC South has games in domes or in Carolina and Tampa.  More reason to favor the passer in the better weather conditions.  If you are going to make any NFL picks on this prop, I’d go with Brees.
