Brett Favre Finally Signs with Minnesota Vikings

Written August 18, 2009 by Jack Jones

brett-favre-joins-vikingsThe deal was finalized today.  ESPN broke the news that Brett Favre will be a Minnesota Viking.  At least we can stop talking about it, right?  Today, though, it is the biggest story in sports.  The deal will reportedly pay Favre between $10-$12 million to play in the 2009 NFL season.

The response has been mixed, with most agreeing that the signing makes the Vikings a better football team on paper, but with skepticism about how the addition of Favre might negatively impact the locker room.

What I would like to know is how long management knew the deal was going to go down before they actually let the players in on the secret.  You have to think that one of the goals in training camp is to bring your team together around a leader, which is usually the quarterback.  If they did know, how could the players rally around Tavaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels knowing they wouldn’t be the starter for the regular season.  If they didn’t know, doesn’t that have a defeating effect on an offense that had latched on to one QB or the other?  I suppose there is still time for Favre to be welcomed to the Vikings, but I wonder how the team will gel around him.

Farve can probably still play football well.  He’s always had a strong arm and has always been mobile enough for me to give him the benefit of the doubt, however, he also throws a lot of interceptions, and if he comes out of the gates and turns the ball over more than he puts it in the endzone, you can bet that the Vikings fans will be calling for his head.

In my opinion, this is still Adrian Peterson’s team.  He is probably the best player in the league that doesn’t play the quarterback position, and if the Vikings stray from getting him as many touches as possible, they won’t see the kind of success they are looking for from this signing.  If Favre can play his role, make the big plays on occasion, and, most importantly, keep the ball in the offense’s hands, this is a team with the talent to make a serious run to the playoffs, and maybe even the Super Bowl.  But that’s a very big maybe.

Typical Favre. Love the guy but the media saga this summer has been so frustrating. Now the Vikings are looking really good and Im looking forward to the season.
