Denver Broncos vs San Diego Chargers NFL Odds

Written October 16, 2009 by Kyle Hunter

The Denver Broncos are far and away the most surprising 5-0 team in the NFL. If they had been 1-4 or even 0-5 most people would not have been surprised, so that tells you how big of a shock it is to see them unbeaten at this point in the season. The San Diego Chargers enter the game at 2-2, losing to both Pittsburgh and Baltimore by 7 and 5 points respectively. The Broncos and Chargers is always a hard fought divisional rivalry, but this week it will have even more on the line than normal.

The Broncos have done it week in and week out; defy expectations for them to lose their first game of the season. Kyle Orton has done a tremendous job managing the offense for Denver, completing 63% of his passes and throwing just one interception through 5 games. Knowshon Moreno is starting to show that amazing talent that all the scouts knew he had, so the Broncos should have an effective running game with him in the backfield. The true strength of the team to this point has been the defensive unit, which has been nothing short of excellent. The Broncos defense is allowing only 8.6 points per game and just 253 total yards per game. Champ Bailey is still the best cover corner in the league and Elvis Dumervil makes life miserable for opposing quarterbacks.  Sign up for a new account with Bodog to do your NFL betting and take advantage of their impressive 10% unlimited deposit bonus!

The San Diego Chargers definitely have a lot of talent on their football team. To this point they have not yet played their best for a full game. The Chargers have showed plenty of spunk in coming from behind to almost beat both Baltimore and Pittsburgh, but they can’t get such a slow start. Phillip Rivers is having a very impressive season thus far, already throwing for 1,245 yards in just four games. The problem area for the Chargers is the running game. LT hasn’t been at full strength and the rushing attack just can’t seem to get things on track. They are averaging a miniscule 54 yards per game on the ground. The defense for the Chargers has also been disappointing, especially against the run. The Chargers defense is allowing 25.5 points per game and 151 yards on the ground per game.

The NFL odds show the Chargers are 3 point home favorites in this Monday night divisional clash. The posted total has been set at 44 points. The Broncos are 0-5-1 against the spread in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.

The Denver Broncos are definitely a better football team than football analysts predicted they would be, but I still am not convinced they can keep having this kind of success. The Chargers offense should be able to point a decent amount of points on the board, so it will be up to the defense to put some pressure on Kyle Orton and make him make some mistakes. In the end I think this is where the Broncos finally get their first loss, though it will be a hard fought game. The pick here is for the Chargers to cover the 3 points.
