Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs Week 4 Betting Line & NFL Predictions

Written September 26, 2008 by Jimmy Boyd

AFC West rivals Denver and Kansas City meet Sunday, September 28th at Arrowhead Stadium. These teams are on opposite ends of the spectrum with the Broncos coming in at 3-0 and the Chiefs at 0-3. Kansas City’s slow start has prompted odds makers to make the Chiefs a 9.5-point home underdog with the total set at 46.5. Jimmy Boyd walks you through another NFL betting preview below.

Denver has been the talk of the town through the first three weeks of the season, with its unbeaten record and the 114 points its put up in those games.

While the offense has been top notch, the defense has struggled, giving up 38 points and 32 points respectively to the Chargers and Saints.

Denver swept the Chiefs a season ago, beating them 27-11 win at Arrowhead in week 10 and 41-7 at home in week 14. Last season’s win at Arrowhead broke a 4-game winless stretch against the Chiefs on the road.

The Broncos will hope that its offense can help them prevail again this week. QB Jay Cutler has been the most sensational player in the league in the early going. He already has 914 passing yards and eight touchdowns against just two interceptions. Much of his success can be attributed to a much improved offensive line which has only allowed one sack thus far.

Cutler has done a great job of spreading the football around to his many talented targets. Brandon Marshall leads the way with 24 receptions and a pair of scores. Rookie Eddie Royals is off to a nice start in the NFL with 18 grabs and a pair of touchdowns of his own and tight end Tony Scheffler has been a great red zone guy with 11 catches and two scores.

Denver has not been the traditional power running team we are used to seeing thus far. Running back Selvin Young has 179 yards rushing and one score while Andre Hall has added another 117 rushing yards. The duo should really start to thrive when teams realize they must go to more nickel and dime packages against Denver. If you think Denver can pull off a repeat of last year’s performances against the Chiefs, bet the Broncos at +9.5 at BetUS and receive up to a 50% signup bonus.

The Chiefs have arguably been the NFL’s worst team through the first three weeks and need to show some improvement this week. They will be trying to put an end to a franchise-worst 12-game losing streak and are attempting to avoid their first 0-4 start since 1980.

The Chiefs will turn back to QB Damon Huard in hopes of making progress this week. The Chiefs merry-go-round of QB’s has the team averaging just 14 points a game and throwing a league-high six picks this season.

The defense hasn’t been much better, giving up a NFL-worst eight runs of 20 yards or longer and ranking 31st in the NFL against the run. They’ll definitely have to keep from giving up the big play against the quick-strike Broncos to stay in the football game.

This is a big time rivalry game and you can expect to see the Chiefs leave it all out on the field. They have not dropped three straight regular season games to Denver since the 1991-92 seasons and they do not want to be a part of a new statistic.

The Chiefs have been better against the pass than the run this season, which may play out well for them against the pass-happy Broncos.

Offensively, I believe that Huard gives the Chiefs the best chance to win and he should do a better job at recognizing coverages and finding ways to get the football to wide receiver Dwayne Bowe and Pro Bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez.

Larry Johnson rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown last week and a similar performance is not out of the question against a weak Denver defense. Denver’s defense ranks 30th in the NFL in yards allowed and has been particularly soft up the middle. The secondary looked clueless against the Saints passing attack last week, giving up 421 yards through the air. I know Huard is no Drew Brees, but he should be able to get the Chiefs down the field against this Denver unit. If you think K.C. can keep this one within the number in the big time AFC West rivalry game, bet the Chiefs at +9.5 at BetUS.
