NFL Spreads: Broncos at Chiefs
Written December 2, 2009 by Rock Henderson
An old AFC West rivalry will renew with then Broncos face-off against the Chiefs. The Broncos improved their playoff chances a week ago with a huge win over the Giants at home. They cannot afford to slip up against one of the bottom feeder teams of the NFL. Sitting at 3-8, Kansas City is playing for pride the rest of the season under first year head coach Todd Haley. After picking up a nice win at home versus the Steelers, the Chiefs managed to get dominated by the Chargers 43-14. KC is getting 5 points at home with the total set at 38 according to our NFL betting lines.
Denver put a stop to their four game losing streak and controls its own destiny when it comes to earning a playoff berth. Rookie head coach Josh McDaniels has been on quite the ride this season, winning six in a row to start the season and managing to get into a verbal altercation with Charger LB Shaun Phillips. QB Kyle Orton has been consistent for the most part this season, throwing for 2447 yards and 12 touchdowns with six interceptions. He hasn’t been asked to do too much in the system the Broncos are running, but is fully capable of having a big day through the air. Rookie RB Knowshon Moreno has been a welcome addition to the team as he has rushed for 688 yards and three scores while splitting duty with veteran back Correll Buckhalter. WR Brandon Marshall has been a model citizen for the team after his temper tantrum during the preseason. Marshall has caught 58 passes for 714 yards and six scores. In what is very New England like, Orton has done a nice job spreading the ball around to a plethora of receivers as eight players have 10 catches or more. The defensive side of the ball finally returned to form against New York, allowing only six points. Led by SS Brian Dawkins, Denver’s D is in the top 5 in yardage and points allowed along with have the 5th ranked pass defense. It will take some time for the Chiefs to get the necessary personnel that can turn the team into winners after cleaning house last season in the front office. Free agent acquisition Matt Cassel has not been exactly what the doctor ordered. Cassel has thrown for a measly 1891 yards and 13 touchdowns with seven interceptions. His numbers are far off from what he put up as a New England Patriot. The Chiefs decided to part ways with embattled running back Larry Johnson a couple weeks ago. In stepped Jamaal Charles to take over the primary running duties and he has rushed for 406 yards in limited duty. The Texas Longhorn alum will get a chance in the last 5 games to prove that he is a number one back in the NFL. WR Chris Chambers was cut from the San Diego Chargers, but what is one man’s trash is another man’s treasure as he has been very good for the Chiefs since coming over. In four games he has caught three touchdown passes and given Kansas City a downfield threat. Dwayne Bowe has had a nice season despite not getting much action thrown his way. He has caught a team high 33 passes for 466 yards and four scores. Kansas City’s defense is atrocious, ranking 27th or worse is every important statistical category.
These type of divisional match-ups are always tough calls because records can be thrown out the door. This will be the two teams first meeting of the year and the Chiefs play much better in Arrowhead Stadium. Look for the Broncos to letdown after their huge home victory and take KC for granted.
