Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs NFL Picks
Written September 24, 2008 by Jack Jones

The undefeated Denver Broncos head to Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday to take on the struggling Kansas City Chiefs. While the Denver offense is clicking and putting up a lot of points, their defense isn’t stopping anyone. That could change when they face a Kansas City offense that has looked anemic in the first three weeks of the season. Odds makers at BetUS have the Broncos at -9.5 over the Chiefs with the total set at 46.5.
Denver comes into this game at 3-0 and as one of only six undefeated teams left in the NFL. It’s not like those games have been blowouts though, as the last two weeks have been nail biters. They should have lost in Week 2 before a 2-point conversion in the final seconds allowed them to beat the San Diego Chargers 39-38. Last week it was a 34-32 win over the New Orleans Saints in which Martin Gramatica missed a 43-yard field goal with less than two minutes remaining that sealed the victory. Both weeks Denver led 21-3 but then let the other team back in it.
The offense is what is carrying this team so far. The Broncos are putting up 38 ppg to lead the league and 435 yards per game which is good for second-best. That offense is led by Jay Cutler, who is playing quarterback better than anyone else in the league right now. He has thrown for 914 yards and eight touchdowns while only being intercepted twice.
Brandon Marshall has been his favorite target, catching 24 passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns despite missing the opener against the Oakland Raiders due to a suspension.

The Broncos could emerge as serious Super Bowl contenders if they could just get their defense to play up to par. Denver is giving up the third most yards with 432 per game, and they are fifth from the worst in points at 28 per contest. The last two games alone has seen opponents put up 70 points and 958 yards.
One of the problems has been the pass defense. Philip Rivers of the Chargers and Drew Brees of the Saints torched the team for 798 passing yards, but don’t expect that out of Kansas City this weekend. Things couldn’t get much worse right now for the Kansas City Chiefs, who have lost a franchise-record 13 games dating back to last season. The quarterback situation has been a mess, with three different starters already and this week it’s back to Damon Huard.
Huard will replace Tyler Thigpen, who showed he wasn’t ready after throwing three interceptions in the 38-14 loss to Atlanta last Sunday. So far this season, Huard is 10-for-16 with 135 yards and has two interceptions to only a single touchdown. Right now the Chiefs are fifth from the bottom in total yards with 282.7 and third from the bottom in points with 10.7 per game.
If you are looking for positives, you can’t really look at the defense either since they are giving up 26 points per game and 362.3 yard per game, good for 24th and 25th in the NFL respectively. If something doesn’t get better fast, the Chiefs will start a season at 0-4 for the first time since 1980.
Last season the Broncos won both matchups and won them easily. The total score was 68-18 which included a 27-11 win at Arrowhead. Cutler was dominate in those two games, throwing for 436 yards, five touchdowns, and just one interceptions. Marshall added 16 grabs for 200 yards and two scores, while running back Selvin Young rushed for 265 yards and a touchdown on only 37 totes.
