Denver Broncos vs. Atlanta Falcons NFL Betting Odds & Spread

Written November 13, 2008 by Jason Lowry

There is no question the surprise team out of the NFC this season is the 6-3 Atlanta Falcons, who look like they struck gold with their rookie quarterback Matt Ryan, as he has changed this team around faster than anyone expected. The Falcons will put their perfect 4-0 record at home on the line this week against the AFC West leading Denver Broncos, who at 5-4 show just how week this division has become. The Falcons really impressed everyone when they controlled the whole game against the Saints last week taking home a 34-20 win, while the Broncos pulled off a huge come from behind win, to beat the Browns 34-30 on the road. For those of you looking to do a little NFL Betting this weekend, the oddsmakers have the Falcons 6 point favorites over the Broncos at Bookmaker.com

The Broncos have had an up and down season from the start, as they looked nearly unbeatable to start the season with their offense scoring at will, then things took a big turn and they were losers of 4 of 5 before there win last week with the offense doing little to nothing during that span. So maybe the big outburst against the Browns is just what this team needed. Cutler did throw an interception for the 4th straight game, but he threw all over the Browns, racking up 447 yards and 3 scores with rookie Eddie Royal leading the way with 6 catches for 164 yards and a score. Tight end Tony Scheffler was back in action for the first time in 4 weeks and had 4 catches for 92 yards. The Broncos added former Denver running back Tatum Bell to the roster this week, as the Broncos continue to try and find an answer in the running game. Last week the Broncos had just 55 yards on the ground.

The Broncos defense didn’t have its best showing, as they let the Browns jump out to an early 20-10 lead going into half, and the Broncos actually trailed 23-13 going into the 4th before the offense exploded for 21 points. They did allow Brady Quinn to have another solid performance throwing the football, as Quinn had 239 yards and 2 scores through the air. The Broncos also struggled against the run giving up over a 160 yards on the ground. Its not going to be easy to keep the Falcons offense in check, so its likely going to be up to the offense to win this one. Bet Broncos +6 at Bookmaker.com

As good as the Falcons have been this season, they still have to keep winning if they want to make the playoffs, as the NFC South is loaded up top with Carolina leading the way at 7-2, and Tampa Bay sitting right along side the Falcons at 6-3. Last week against the Saints the two new additions to the team this year in Matt Ryan and Michael Turner both had another solid day at work. Ryan threw for 248 yards and 2 scores, with one of those going to his favorite target this year in Roddy White, who had 5 catches for 68 yards and a score. Turner plowed his way for 96 yards and a score, while backup Jerious Norwood also got in the action, but his big play came in the passing game, as he took a short pass from Ryan 67 yards for a score. If this offense continues to click like this, its going to be a very tough team for anyone to beat.

Now as much hype as the offense is getting with the new rookie quarterback and stud running back coming in, the defense is the real reason this team is sitting with such a great record to start the season. Last week they might of let Drew Brees pass for 422 yards, but whenever a big play was needed this defense made it, as they picked off Brees 3 times, including one by Chevis Jackson that he took 95 yards to the house to put the Falcons up for good. The Falcons were also very strong against the run, as they kept the Saints out of the endzone on the ground, and gave up just a little over a 100 yards. After 9 games this defense ranks 5th in yards allowed at just 274 yards a game, but that is likely to again go up this week with the Broncos offense coming to town. Bet Falcons -6 at Bookmaker.com
