Denver Broncos vs. Carolina Panthers NFL Betting Odds & Spread
Written December 11, 2008 by Jason Lowry
The Carolina Panthers sent a message to the rest of the NFL last week, with the way they ran all over the Buccaneers in a 38-23 win on Monday Night Football, and this week they get to host the AFC West division leading Denver Broncos, as they look to keep their perfect season at home in line. The Broncos nearly suffered a huge scare last week against the Chiefs, but were able to find a way to win 24-17. The Broncos are pretty much in at 8-5 with a 3 game lead in their division, but for the Panthers they can still grab the No.1 seed in the NFC if they are able to win out. For those of you looking to do some NFL betting on this one. the oddsmakers have the Panthers 7.5 point favorites at home over the Broncos at Sportsbook.com
Now even though the Broncos play in one of the weakest divisions in football, and have suffered some pretty bad losses to teams they shouldn’t lose to, this team is playoff bound, and have some big wins under their belt as well, including their beating of the Jets just a couple weeks ago. Last week against the Chiefs Jay Cutler got off to a rough start, as he was picked off by Maurice Leggett early in the first quarter to put the Broncos in a 0-10 hole. Cutler quickly turned things around, as he wound up throwing for 286 yards and 2 scores on 32 of 40 passing. Both those scores went to star receiver Brandon Marshall who wound up with 11 catches for 91 yards. The Broncos also got a solid game out of the backfield duo of Peyton Hillis and Tatum Bell who combined for 110 yards and a score. Now against the Panthers its unlikely they will be able to run with much success, so its going to fall on the arm of Cutler and the play of the defense.
Now with the way the Panthers come into this one running the football, and the lack of defense the Broncos have played over this season, its going to be really hard for this team to win if they can’t find a way to keep the Panthers from running for over 200 yards in this one. Last week against the Chiefs the Broncos showed some signs of the ability to slow down the run, as they allowed Larry Johnson just 36 yards, after he torched them for nearly 200 earlier this season. Even if the defense struggles the offense can score with anyone so don’t count Denver out of this one. Bet Denver Broncos +7.5 at Sportsbook.com
The Panthers really looked impressive last week running the football, as DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart combined to run for 301 yards and 4 touchdowns, as they used a number of big runs and stiff arms to beat up on the Buccaneers defense. Now as good as the running game was, Jake Delhomme struggled throwing the football, as he had two interceptions and just 173 yards passing, as nearly all of those went to Steve Smith who had 117 yards and the lone receiving touchdown for the team. It should come to no surprise that the Panthers are going to try and pound the football in this one, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see another huge performance from this unit.
The Panthers defense was great against the run last week allowing the Bucs just 86 yards on the ground, but really struggled against the pass, as they allowed Jeff Garcia to throw for 321 yards and had no answer for Antonio Byrant, who hauled in 200 of those yards, and two touchdowns. This week the secondary better get it together or its going to be back and forth between these two teams, as the Panthers will run all over the Broncos, while Cutler and the Broncos shred the Panthers secondary. Look for this one to be a little closer than they are expecting. Bet Carolina Panthers -7.5 at Sportsbook.com
