Cleveland Browns at Jacksonville Jaguars NFL Picks & Spread

Written October 23, 2008 by Jason Lowry

Editors Note: See who Jason Lowry has picked to win in this one, as the Browns Jaguars is part of his Week 8 NFL Package!

This weekend the Cleveland Browns are almost in a must win situation on the road over the Jacksonville Jaguars if they plan on getting into the playoff picture this season, as another loss would put them at 2-5 on the season. As for the Jags they come off a bye week, and a win this week over the Browns could them over .500 for the first time this season. The oddsmakers think the Jaguars will do just that, as they have them 7 point favorites over the Browns at Bookmaker.com

The Browns offense comes into the game this weekend without one of it’s leading receiver as tight end Kellen Winslow is facing a 1 game suspension for comments he made towards the organization. But that might not be as big a deal if Derek Anderson can get things going with Braylon Edwards. Edwards has over 200 yards in his last two games, so there is signs that this combo is getting on the right track finally. Some though are starting to wonder how long it will be Anderson to Edwards, instead of Brady Quinn to Anderson, as Quinn could see the field real soon if the Browns keep losing. Its not going to be easy going into Jacksonville and scoring on this group, but the Browns have to find a way to get it done before its too late.

The Browns defense didn’t play bad at all last week allowing the Redskins just 14 points, so it’s not as though this unit is at fault for the loss last week. One concern you have to have with the Browns defense is they had no answer for Clinton Portis, as Portis pounded out 175 yards on 27 carries plus a touchdown. Though the Jags haven’t been running the ball with the same kind of success they have in the pass, but as soon as the offensive line gets healthy this offense could really take off. We already mentioned that the Jags have struggled running the football this season, and while it might be in part to the performance of the line, some think it has to do with quarterback David Garrard play this season. After finishing 2007 with a passer rating over 100 last season Garrard is no where near that this season, as his rating is just 84.5 through 6 games. Now the Browns haven’t been much to speak of on the defensive side of things giving up on average 345 yards per game, but you have to like the way they have played of late.

In their last game their were few that thought the Jags would go into Denver and hold the Broncos to just 17 points, but they did just that, and that was largely because they held Jay Cutler to just 192 yards and 2 score, and forced him to throw an interception. The Jags did struggle against the run allowing backup Michael Pittman to run 20 times for 109 yards, so it could be trouble if Jamal Lewis is able to repeat that success this weekend. While we think Lewis will get his, we think the big concern comes in making sure they keep Edwards from going off in the receiving game. Bet Jaguars -7 at Bookmaker.com
