Cleveland Browns Release Derek Anderson
Written March 9, 2010 by Jack Jones
Derek Anderson has finally been released by the Cleveland Browns. He spent four seasons with the franchise and was a Pro Bowler in 2007 when he led the team to a 10-6 record, but after the team acquired Seneca Wallace via trade the writing was on the wall.
So where will Anderson end up? The most likely candidate right now seems to be the Arizona Cardinals, who will want a veteran backup to Matt Leinart with Kurt Warner retiring. Another possibility is the Carolina Panthers, who released Jake Delhomme a few days ago. Anderson could challenge Matt Moore for the starter’s job. A pair of longer shots are the Buffalo Bills and Seattle Seahawks (Wallace’s former team).
Does this mean that Brady Quinn will be the starting quarterback in Cleveland this year? Not necessarily as the team plans on running the West Coast offense in 2010, and Wallace has spent seven years in the system over in Seattle.
This does kind of seem like a Holmgren move. When he left the Green Bay Packers for Seattle, he went after Brett Favre’s backup, Matt Hasselback. That move worked out pretty well. Don’t be surprised if Cleveland keeps on making moves with the position though. They could try to make a trade for a veteran quarterback, or take a signal caller in the draft. Still, the NFL odds makers make the Browns a long shot to be a contender. BetUS has Cleveland listed at 100-to-1 to win the Super Bowl this year.
