Browns vs. Ravens Predictions

Written September 17, 2008 by Jason Lowry

Sunday Sept 21, the Cleveland Browns take on the team that once replaced the franchise in the Baltimore Ravens. The Browns faced another tough opponent in the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, and in a much needed win they fell at home 10-6. The Ravens had the week off thanks to Hurricane Ike, and while they sat out week 2, it had to be a good week off after a 17-10 win over the Bengals in week 1.

The Browns offense was just unable to do much right in tough conditions last week, as they were able to just put up 2 field goals. Derek Anderson was not at Pro Bowl form throwing 18 of 32 including 2 two the other team. Braylon Edwards was again unable to get anything going, as he hauled in just 3 catches for 32 yards. Kellen Winslow led the way with 7 receptions for 55 yards, but that was about as good as it got. Running back Jamal Lewis didn’t have much luck either rushing 9 times for 38 yards for just 2 yards a carry. If the Browns are going to win they have to put more points on the board, and Anderson and Edwards have to start hooking up more often.

The Browns defense had a little help from the weather and the home crowd holding the Steelers to just 10 points, and for one of the few times the loss can’t be blamed on them. Safety Mike Adams led the way with 9 tackles, while a couple of guys combined for 3 sacks. If the Ravens offense is able to pick apart the Browns defense with a rookie quarterback, its not going to be a good sign for the rest of the season. Bet Browns +2.5 at JustBet.com

Speaking of the Ravens and their rookie QB Joe Flacco, they really couldn’t be to upset with what they got from him in week 1. He did only throw for 129 yards and no scores, but most importantly he didn’t make any mistakes and allowed the defense to do the work. The offense gets a boost with Willis McGahee back in action, and he joins a duo of rookie Ray Rice and fullback Le’Ron McClain who combined for 150 yards last week. The Ravens also got two great runs from unexpected players, as Flacco took hit to the house from 38 yards out, and receiver Mark Clayton got the Ravens on the board first with a 42 yard touchdown run in the first. The key is no turnovers and ball control, and if they do that the defense should give them plenty of chances to take home the win.

Speaking of that Ravens defense it was pretty much lights out, as the only touchdown the Bengals were able to score came on a 65 yard fumble thanks to the offense. Corner Chris McAlister was all over the field, as he not only picked off one of Carson Palmer’s passes, but he recovered a fumble as well. Another player that stepped up was linebacker Jarret Johnson who not only had one of the teams two sacks, but led the team in tackles as well. If the defense can play like old, its good enough to shut about any offense down, so the Ravens could just be a big surprise team when it is all said in done. Bet Ravens -2.5 at JustBet.com
