Buffalo 2009 College Football Predictions
Written July 15, 2009 by InfoPlays
The Buffalo Bulls won‘t likely win the MAC again in 2009, but having a senior core on offense to help first-year starting QB Zach Maynard adjust on the fly will ease matters. If the defense holds up against the explosive offenses of the MAC and James Starks can stay healthy in the backfield, the Bulls could at least contend for a conference title again. Offense: Veteran QB Drew Willy is gone, but Buffalo doesn’t lack leadership on offense. Running back James Starks is one of five returning senior starters. Starks is a force who runs behind his pads and he has the speed to break away from the secondary in the open field. He averaged 4.9 yards/carry with 16 rushing touchdowns, and he also caught 52 balls out of the backfield to pose as a dual threat. He did all that as a junior despite missing three games due to injury. Backup Brandon Thermilus rushed for 454 yards in ‘08 and he handled the workload in the spring while Starks recovered from a minor surgery. Receiver Naaman Roosevelt demands a lot of attention after averaging 100.1 receiving yards/game last season.
Roosevelt was the team’s top playmaker last year with 104 grabs for 1,402 yards and 13 touchdowns. Senior flanker Brett Hamlin developed into Willy’s third-down security blanked. Sophomore Zach Maynard will likely take over for Willy at quarterback, but his job isn’t secured just yet. Buffalo squandered his redshirt last season when Willy was temporarily knocked out of their CMU game. He only threw three passes as a freshman, and he’ll try and hold off two redshirt freshmen in Jerry Davis and Cory Jorgensen on the fall depth chart. Three starters on the line, including All-MAC guard Jeff Niedermier, will have to be replaced. Sophomore Matt Ostrowski drives defenders off the ball in the backside running game and won’t be on Maynard’s blind side. That will be the assignment of senior Andrew West, the line’s most experienced starter.

Defense: This unit forced a Ball State meltdown in the MAC championship last season, resulting in a conference title for the Bulls. Eight upperclassmen are listed as starters on the fall two-deep. Buffalo brings back nine starters from last year’s squad, including the entire back seven. The secondary figures to be the strength with all-conference candidates Mike Newton and Davonte Shannon at safety. Newton had 121 tackles in ‘08, while Shannon earned All-MAC honors as a freshman and sophomore.
The front four is the biggest concern where the Bulls will be tested to stand up strong against power running teams. The first-team line averages 250 pounds across the board. The first-team linebackers in Imani Chatman, Scott Pettigrew and Justin Winters, all tip the scales at less than 216 pounds. Winters played big, though, registering a team-high 125 tackles in ‘08.
