Written December 2, 2008 by Jason Lowry

The Mid American Conference Football Championship will be up for grabs this weekend, when the undefeated No. 14 ranked Ball State Cardinals from the West take on East division Champions Buffalo Bulls, who could really play spoiler with a win this Friday night. Now these two teams didn’t face off in the regular season, but there is no question that Ball State is the favorite in this one, as Ball State has a chance for one of its best finishes in school history. If you are looking to bet on NCAA Football this weekend, the oddsmakers have Ball State coming into this one 15 point favorites over Buffalo at Sportsbook.com
Not only do the Bulls come into this one big time underdogs, but this team really had a bad finish to the season, as they lost at home last week to Kent State 21-24. The game went back and forth the whole way, as the two teams changed leads 5 times with Kent State going ahead for good on a 25 yard touchdown pass with nearly 6 minutes to go in the game. The Bulls offense had its struggles moving the ball at times, but did get good games out of quarterback Drew Willy who threw for 240 yards and ran and passed for a score, and running back James Starks who ran for 136 yards and a score. Now a lot has to go right for this team to pull off the huge upset this week, but most importantly the offense has to find a way to keep pace with the Cardinals, who are going to put some points on the board in this one.
The Bulls defense comes into this one really letting the home crowd down with its performance against Kent State last week, as they failed over and over again to stop the Golden Flashes from scoring when the offense gave them the lead. The main problem for these guys, was they had no answer for the run game of Kent State, as they ran it 44 times for 312 yards and two scores. This week they face a Ball State offense that can not only run but throw it better than anyone else in the conference, so its hard to say just what this team has to do to win this football game. Now getting to Ball State and the damage they have caused to every team they have faced this season, as they ran through the conference with only one game coming with in a touchdown, as they only beat Central Michigan by 7 a few weeks ago. Now in their last game against Western Michigan they were playing for the West title, and the Cardinals came to play, as they finished off Western Michigan 45-22 thanks to 3 touchdown runs from MiQuale Lewis, who finished with 120 yards on the ground. The Cardinals also got a great game from quarterback Nate Davis who thew for 273 yards and a score, and added another 64 yards and another score on the ground. If the offense plays like this again this week, the Bulls have no chance in this one.
Now Ball State’s defense has had its let teams score some points this season, but when your offense scores as well as the Cardinals, the defense just has to keep the opposing team from scoring in a hurry. Last week against Western Michigan they gave up plenty of yards, as the Broncos had 206 passing yards and another 137 on the ground, but forced two turnovers, and kept the Broncos from scoring more than once in any quarter. Look for Ball States defense to its job again this week, as the offense should put this one in safe hands early on. Bet Ball State -15 at Sportsbook.com
