Buffalo Bills at Tennessee Titans NFL Lines
Written November 15, 2009 by Black Widow
In a reasonably meaningless game for both teams, the 3-5 Buffalo Bills visit the 2-6 Tennessee Titans this weekend. But if you wager on the NFL, then this game is far from meaningless. The Bills are coming off a bye week, while the Titans have won back-to-back games, including last week’s 34-27 road win at San Francisco. The books have installed a line of Tennessee -8 over Buffalo with a Total Set of 41 points according to the most recent NFL odds.
Vince Young has started the last two games for the Titans, helping lead his team to victories in both contests. Young hasn’t been spectacular, but he is avoiding mistakes and he has been very accurate. Though he has thrown for just 297 yards and a touchdown in his last 2 games, Young has completed 73% of his passes and hasn’t turned it over once. The Titans had committed 18 turnovers under Kerry Collins in their 0-6 start. A big reason for Tennessee’s success of late has been Chris Johnson, who has compiled 363 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns the last two weeks. He leads the NFL with 959 rushing yards, and he has five touchdowns on plays of 50 or more yards from scrimmage, showing how explosive he can be. Defensively, the Titans forced four turnovers against the 49ers last week, and they have gotten a big boost in the secondary with a couple key players returning from injury.

Dick Jauron is firmly planted on the hot seat right now after the Bills’ 3-5 start this season. The offense is mostly to blame, as Buffalo ranks as the 29th-best offense in the league. QB Trent Edwards is cleared to play, returning from a concussion. But he hasn’t been much better than backup Ryan Fitzpatrick, as Edwards has posted one touchdown to five interceptions and a terrible 54.6 QB rating in his last four games. Terrell Owens was supposed to rejuvenate this offense, but he has recorded just 281 receiving yards this season and has been virtually a non-factor. Buffalo has played well under Fitzpatrick the last three weeks, going 2-1 with road wins over the Jets and Panthers. But they have their defense to thank for those results, forcing 10 turnovers in the two victories. Rookie safety Jairus Byrd has made his case for Rookie of the Year honors in the last three weeks alone, totaling six interceptions. He is tied for the league-lead in interceptions this season with seven. Buffalo has to win here if they want any chance of ending their 9-year playoff drought.
