Ben Burns Weekend Bad Beats Recap
Written September 29, 2008 by Jack Jones
One of our favorite handicappers for the football season, Ben Burns, had some great wins this weekend but had two tough losses his clients had to shake. Let’s take a look at them below.
Saturday: Minnesota Gophers at Ohio State Buckeyes
Burns had the Buckeyes -17 early in the day in their first game of the Big 10 schedule against the Gophers of Minnesota. Running back Beanie Wells came back to the lineup for Ohio State and was impressive with his more than 100 yards rushing. Quarterback Terrelle Pryor did damage with his feet with 97 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Overall, the rushing game belonged to Ohio State with a 278-88 difference in yards on the ground. With 20-3 halftime lead and a 34-6 advantage in the fourth quarter many clients were probably rushing to the ticket window to pick up their winnings.

Things did not go as well after that with Minnesota scoring 15 points in the final seven minutes of the game to squeak in a backdoor cover with a 34-20 final on the scoreboard. The first of the two touchdowns killed the late bettors who were only able to get -20 with the football betting lines, while the second touchdown was a dagger to those who got in early with Burns’ football picks. Either way it was not how this handicapper planned to start his afternoon.
Sunday: San Diego Chargers at the Oakland Raiders
While Burns had to watch his bet on the “under” get blindsided, if you had the Raiders then there is no doubt that you were also feeling his pain. The NFL betting odds on this game showed the Chargers were eight point favorites and the total was set at 45.5. With an early lead held by the Raiders, the game looked in hand. The score was only 15-3 heading into the fourth quarter and that’s when all hell broke loose.
With two minutes to go, the Charagers had made a late rally to tie the game at 18, but a long kick return by Darren Sproles set up a Nate Kaeding field goal to give them a 21-18 lead with 1:51 remaining. All is still looking good right? Not so fast as a turn over on downs by the Raiders gave San Diego the ball back just 30 seconds later, but then LaDanian Tomlinson breaks a 41-yard touchdown run to break the hearts of both players on the Raiders and those whose NFL expert picks were on the UNDER like Ben Burns. San Diego only had 295 total yards for the game after going for more than 400 in each of their last two contests.
There is your weekend recap of two tough games that Ben Burns’ clients drew the unlucky side of the stick. If you want to get your revenge on the books as bad as he does, pick up a package from him tonight.
