BYU at TCU Football Odds & College Football Picks

Written October 15, 2008 by Jay Todd

BYU squares off against TCU in a huge game in not just the MWC, but for BYU’s BCS hopes as well. TCU will be the Cougar’s toughest test before they face Utah late in the season. Look for BYU to be focused and ready as they know this win will put them one win closer to crashing the BCS. BetUS currently has this game listed as a pick em, which means neither team is favored in the college football odds.

BYU is led by quarterback Max Hall. Hall is silently putting up Heisman-like numbers. He has thrown for 20 touchdowns and has tossed just four interceptions. He is an experienced player with a strong arm. Last season Hall threw for over 300 yards and a touchdown in a win against this same TCU team. Look for Hall to put up huge numbers in this one.

Hall’s top weapon is wide out Austin Collie. Collie has been one of the best wide outs in the country this season. He is averaging a solid 14.3 yards per reception and has caught eight touchdown passes. Look for Hall to target Collie early and often. Running back Harvey Ugna will have a sound game on the ground in this one. He is a tough runner and has scored four touchdowns on the year, while averaging 4.5 yards per carry. Last season he rushed for two scores against TCU.

TCU is entering this game after a sloppy win over a below average Colorado State team, in which they only scored 13 points. Despite a solid record of 6-1, TCU’s wins have come against teams with a combined record of 15-24, including one non division one team. BYU presents them with a much tougher defense, so look for TCU to struggle moving the ball. TCU might use two quarterbacks in this game. Andrew Dalton and Marcus Jackson have each seen plenty of playing time behind center. The two have combined for only three passing touchdowns. With such a week passing game TCU will try to run and run often. However, BYU has been tough against the run and have only allowed four rushing scores on the season.

With the talented play of this high powered BYU offense and an above average defense look for BYU to continue their undefeated season at TCU on Thursday. Jay Todd says that one of his free football picks for the week is to take BYU -1.5 over TCU.
