California at Colorado Line

The Colorado Buffaloes will officially make their mark in the newly formed Pac-12 Conference when they host the California Golden Bears Saturday afternoon. The Buffaloes will also be looking for their first win of the 2011 season, as they fell 17-34 at Hawaii last week. It was Colorado’s 18th consecutive loss on the road. The Golden Bears had a much better start to their season, beating Fresno State 36-21. These two teams faced off in non-conference action last season, with California crushing Colorado 52-7 at home.

Current odds have California favored by 6.5-points over Colorado with the total set at 48.5.

Outside of a couple of turnovers the Golden Bears really played a solid game in their opener against Fresno State. New starting quarterback Zach Maynard completed 16 of 36 for 266 yards and two scores with an interception. While his completion percentage was low, he made a bunch of big plays to get the offense rolling.

Isi Sofele led the ground attack with 83 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries, while Maynard finished second on the team with 53 yards thanks to a nice 48 yard run.

Marvin Jones caught five passes for 118 yards and two scores, while Keenan Allen hauled in eight passes for 112 yards. It was the first time two Cal receivers had at least 100 yards in the same game since DeSean Jackson and Lavelle Hawkins reached that mark in 2006.

Defensively the Golden Bears held Fresno State to 210 yards of total offense. They were really strong against the run, holding the Bulldogs to just 68 yards on the ground.

Colorado

While traveling all the way to Hawaii isn’t an easy thing to do, the Buffaloes have simply been a different team on the road than they have at home. Whether or not that is enough to bring home a win this week is a tough call.

Colorado managed just 240 yards of total offense in their opener against Hawaii.  Senior quarterback Tyler Hanson went 16 of 30 for 223 yards and two touchdowns, but was sacked seven times and threw an interception.  If Colorado doesn’t get better play up front against California, they are going to have a hard time winning the game.

Rodney Stewart led the Buffaloes with 52 yards on the ground, but needed 18 carries to reach that mark. With the way California shut down Fresno State’s rushing attack, it’s hard to imagine Stewart having a big game on the ground this Saturday.

While Stewart struggled running the ball, he led the team with four catches for 98 yards, including a nice 52 yard catch and run. Sophomore wide out Paul Richardson caught both of Hanson’s touchdown passes, but finished the game with just three catches for 49 yards.

Defensively the Buffaloes allowed 343 yards of total offense. They actually did a great job against the passing attack of Hawaii, limiting them to 178 yards. However, they allowed 165 yards on the ground, which is a big concern going forward.

Betting Trends:

California is 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games in September, but just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as a road favorite of 3.5-10.0.

Colorado is 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 games as a home underdog, but are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games after accumulating less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game.
