Card Counting Online
February 18, 2008
Is it worth it to do card counting when playing online blackjack? The short answer is no, because the cards are shuffled after each hand. This is probably the worst situation you could be in if you want to try and count cards in order to turn the house advantage over and give it to yourself, because you are the only one playing at the “table” so you don’t even have the advantage of seeing how the other players at the table are performing.
Land-based casinos thwart card counters using several different methods from using more decks to shuffling prematurely. The problem faced when the action is stopped so the dealer can shuffle the cards is that everyone else at the table who isn’t counting cards doesn’t have the chance to shove their chips over to the dealer’s rack. This is costing the casino money and they have found a way around it, the continuous shuffling machine.
Online casinos use pretty much the same concept as the continuous shuffling machine, because the cards are thrown back in after each hand with the chance that they are thrown right back out on the next set of cards. The odds are the same as in our continuous shuffling machine blackjack odds article. Some casinos play a little trickery on the eye though and take short breaks between every few hands to show an animated dealer going through the motions of shuffling the cards, but this is all for show and to make the player feel more comfortable. To give the client an environment that is closer to the one he is used to at land-based facilities.
