Baseball Picks: St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers
Written July 8, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The Cards currently sit in first place on top of the NL Central standings with a 46-39 record. They took the first game of this series last night as Adam Wainwright was fabulous pitching into the 9th inning. The team leader, league’s best player and future 1st ballot hall of famer is Albert Pujols. His .336 batting average is staggering along with the 31 homers and 82 RBIs which are just silly good. Rookie Colby Rasmus has been helping out nicely of late as his numbers are climbing.. He is hitting .288 with 11 homers and 34 RBIs on the year. Ryan Ludwick does have 12 home runs and 44 RBIs but is hitting only .242 and has been poor overall. New acquisition Mark DeRosa is out for a while so the Cards will need other sources to step up. The man on the mound tonight is Todd Wellemeyer who in my mind is amongst the leagues most hittable pitchers. He is 7-7 on the season but fields a 5.44 ERA. His home/away and day/night starts are very similar. In his six June starts he went 1-3 with a 6.89 ERA and to be honest looked worse then that. In his two starts against the Brewers this season he is 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA. In order for St.Louis to win tonight they will need a big performance from “Albert The Great.” Expect Wellemeyer to get pounded and for the Brew Crew to be ready to play looking to even the series. This is a very good game to take. Today’s MLB betting lines are posted and they show the Brewers as -120 moneyline favorites against the Cardinals. The over/under for the game is set at 9.5 runs.
The Milwaukee Brewers are coming off a loss to St.Louis last night where they were simply silenced by Wainwright. The Crew is in second place in the NL Central currently two games behind the Cards. They have as good of a one-two punch as any team in baseball. Ryan Braun is in my mind a top five player in the game. He has 16 home runs, 58 RBIs and a .322 batting average. Prince Fielder is the other man in the middle and is an absolute monster at the plate. He has accrued 22 home runs and 76 RBIs this season while hitting .310 from the plate. Cory Hart and JJ Hardy have both been bitter disappointments this season but are talented enough to explode at any time. Mike Cameron has given this team a big power boost with 14 homers and 39 RBIs. Jeff Suppan gets the nod tonight. He is 5-6 with a 4.60 ERA on the season. Suppan is far worse at home then on the road. His home record is 1-5 with a 6.08 ERA while he is 4-1 with a 3.63 ERA on the road. His day/night numbers are very similar. In Jeff’s six June starts he went 2-2 with a 4,28 ERA and is also coming off a great start in early July when he went seven innings of four hit ball while only allowing one run against the Cubs. In two starts against the Cards this season he is 1-1 with a 4.22 ERA. My gut tells me Suppan is going to be very effective tonight. I also am predicting Ryan Braun has at least one home runs and a minimum three RBIs tonight. Something tells me the Brewers are going to come out like gang busters after last nights poor performance at home.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Cardinals are 9-3 in their last 12 Wednesday games while the Brewers are 12-5 in their last 17 Wednesday games. St.Louis is 6-4 in their last 10 games while Milwaukee is 4-6. Now, while most trends and numbers say to take the Cards tonight, my gut feeling and eye test tells me the Brewers need this game. These are the top two teams in the NL Central and the last thing the Crew needs is the Cards coming on here and flexing their muscle. When you reach a plateau like I have in my career you need to make calls like this…BEST BET Milwaukee Brewers, Lets roll.
Jordan’s Pick: Milwaukee Brewers -120 (BEST BET)
Well, the BEST BET streak has reached 18 in a row. I apologize to all who took Florida as I was told Hanley was going to give it a go which he obviously did not. However, another night of nice profit margin as Beckett and The Nation took care of business. Comments always welcome and lets go get that cash.
Documented MLB Record:
94-61-1 OVERALL
40-19-1 BEST BETS

Jennie,
I appreciate the kind words. I always try to get at least one a day but when it comes to peoples money you never want to force the issue. That is what seperates the amatures from the true pros. Make sure to keep reading and your feedback is much appreciated. I will have two coming your way Friday.
P.S. You picked one great name for your son
