Arizona Cardinals v. Dallas Cowboys Football Betting Odds

Written October 10, 2008 by Jimmy Boyd

The Dallas Cowboys head to the desert to take on the Arizona Cardinals in what figures to be one of the highest scoring contests of the week. Odds makers would have to agree, setting the total at 50.5 points with the Cowboys favored by 5.

The Cowboys are ranked second in the NFC in points per game and the Cardinals are ranked third and both teams are doing most of their damage through the air. Arizona ranks second in the NFC with 282.6 passing yards per contest and the Cowboys rank third with 268.6.

Dallas is averaging 30.2 points per game on the season and is off to a 4-1 start after last Sunday’s 31-22 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. It was a much needed win after losing to Washington as an 11-point favorite the previous weekend. The Cowboys can’t not afford another setback this week in the tight NFC East with the 4-0 Giants leading the way.

The good news is that Dallas has won both of its road games thus far. The Cowboys most definitely have history on their side with a 55-27-1 all-time regular season advantage. The Cards have also lost three straight games to Dallas.

Dallas has done an excellent job of keeping its opponents off balance when it has the ball this season. While QB Tony Romo has 1,368 yards and 11 touchdowns, running backs Marion Barbers and Felix Jones have combined for nearly 650 yards on the ground. Terrell Owens has been held to three or fewer catches in three of five games this season, but he was able to get loose for a touchdown against Cincy last week to tie Marshall Faulk for fourth on the all-time league touchdown list with 136. Tight end Jason Witten continues to put up stellar numbers with 35 grabs and two scores thus far.

Defensively, Dallas has been strong against the run this season, ranking 10th in the NFL. The Boys held the Bengals to only 61 yards on the ground last week. While Kurt Warner has put up some big numbers throughout his career, I think Dallas will still make the veteran signal caller beat them through the air. While Dallas in unbeaten on the road this season, Arizona has won five straight at home dating back to last season. In fact, the Cards are 8-2 at home since Ken Whisenhunt took over as head man and have outscored their opponents by a 72-17 margin at home this season.

The Cardinals are averaging 29.4 points per contest and lead the NFC West with a 3-2 mark.

If any team can match the offensive fire power of the Cowboys, it is the Cardinals. Veteran QB Jurt Warner bounced back from a rough outing in week 4 to torch the Bills for 250 yards and two touchdowns. Warner has 1,472 yards and 10 scores against four picks this season. One major key for Warner will be to not turn the ball over like he did in a loss to the Jets when he threw three picks and lost three more fumbles.

Without injured wideout Anquan Boldin, we expect the Cowboys to key on Larry Fitzgerald. The star receiver has 31 grabs and four touchdowns this season. Steve Breaston is trying to make it so teams can’t double Fitzgerald and has 20 catches thus far.

While Dallas has been tough against the run, it’s only going to help Arizona’s passing attack if they can get Edgerring James on track. The tailback rushed for 123 yards against Buffalo last week and has 334 on the season.

Warner has been great at home this season and should be able to put up big numbers as long as he stays on his feet. If you think the Cardinals are a worthy home dog, bet them at +5 at Bookmaker.
