MLB Picks: St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs
Written July 12, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The Cardinals are in first place in the NL Central standings and will be in first headed to the all-star break regardless what happens tonight. St.Louis is 48-41 overall while having solid home and away records. When you think about the red birds you think about Albert Pujols. He is MLBs best player by a long shot. His .338 BA is one of the leagues best while his power numbers are mind blowing with 32 home runs and 85 RBIs. Albert is this team and they most certainly will go how he does. Newly acquired Mark DeRosa is injured but Colby Rasmus has been playing much better of late. Ryan Ludwick has been a bitter disappointment but has been showing signs of life recently. On the mound tonight is Adam Wainwright who is pitching superbly of late.. He is 9-5 with a 3.09 ERA. In his first two July starts he is 1-0 with a 0.52 ERA. His home/away numbers are peculiar. He is only 3-4 at home but has a 2.35 ERA. On the road he is 6-1 with a higher 4.05 ERA. Adam has been great against the Cubbies this season. In three starts he is 2-0 with a 2.49 ERA. Look for a low scoring game here as Pujols Probably won’t be much of a factor as Sweet Lou has stated he will be walked every chance they get. A pitchers duel for sure. According to today’s MLB lines, the Cubs are listed as -113 favorites against the Cardinals, while the over/under is set at 8.5 runs.
The Chicago Cubs have been one of the most under achieving teams in baseball so far this season. At 42-42. the Cubbies have been inconsistent in a big way. Their considered to be best player is Alfonso Soriano and he has just been terrible. His 14 homers and 33 RBIs are way below what he expects, not to mention his awful .232 batting average. Kosuke Fukodome has struggled for the most part hitting .256 with seven home runs and only 27 RBIs. However, while most have struggled Derrek Lee is playing as well as anybody of late. His .281 BA has risen a lot while his 17 homers and 56 RBIs have been much needed. Aramis Ramirez has been injured but has come back and will be a force in the second half. On to tonight’s pitcher. Randy Wells is a 27 year old rookie who is 4-3 with a 2.48 ERA. This kid is fantastic. His home/away numbers are similar while his day/night stat line is a solid difference. In his day starts he is 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA while at night he has gone 2-2 with a 2.08 ERA. Almost a full point difference. This is his first career start against the Cardinals and I fully expect him to dazzle the crown. what a stud this pitcher is. Look for Derrek Lee to have a nice game while Alfonso Soriano will have a big night headed to the break. Picks below.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Cardinals are 2-6 in their last eight Sunday games. The Cubs are 12-4 in their last 16 games when they are the favor tie. Chicago is 9-4 in their last 13 home games. In the head to head area the Cardinals are 7-4 in the first 11 meetings this season. THE UNDER IS A MORTAL LOCK tonight as I also recommend the Cubs as a medium play.
Jordan’s Picks: St.Louis Cardinals/Chicago Cubs UNDER 8.5 (BEST BET) & Cubs -113 (Medium Play) [Editor's note Note: Both Plays are on the 2nd Game of today's Double Header]
Wow, the streak has officially reached 20 straight BEST BET wins in a row. An amazing accomplishment as this is a very big corner stone for me. With that being said, in no way am I satisfied. Tonight we will most certainly add to that streak. The Halos took care of the Yanks Friday night as we lost our medium play on the Pads as Sanchez threw a no hitter, good for him. Lets get down to business. Time to head into the break with a bang. Comments and feedback always appreciated.
