Baseball Picks: St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers

Written August 18, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz

cardinals-dodgers-predictions-081809The cards are coming off a 3-2 win last night over LA. The damage was done by two long balls. Albert Pujols hit a solo homer and Rick Ankiel hit a two run home run which was all that ace Chris Carpenter needed. Tonight St. Louis looks to separate themselves even more from the rest of the NL Central. For everybody banking on either the Phillies or Dodgers representing the National League in the World Series, I’d take a step back and watch the Cardinals. Pujols, Holliday, Ludwick and DeRosa is a four man combo that could take you to the promise land. They have the pitching staff and bullpen to do so as well. On the mound tonight is Mitchell Boggs. On the season he is 1-1 with a 3.78 ERA in seven starts. The 25 year old youngster has above average stuff. A legit fastball with a good breaking piece is what makes him effective. The major factor that Boggs will have working for him not only tonight but for the rest of the season is he does not need to be brilliant. With an above average lineup he just needs to be decent which will give his team a chance to win. Look for Matt Holliday to have a big game tonight and for Rick Ankiel to swing the bat well. St. Louis can make a statement with a win tonight, Manager Tony La Russa will surely remind his team of that.   Tuesday’s MLB betting lines show the Dodgers -195 against the Cardinals, with a total set for 8.5 runs.

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ big lead in the NL West has evaporated. Since LA has gone 3-7 in their last 10 games overall, they now only lead Colorado by 4.5 games. The offense has hit a major road block. The Dodgers have four runs or more only two times in their last nine games. Casey Blake and James Loney have lost their power swing while their RBI production has dipped. Orlando Hudson has not been himself while Rafael Furcal has swung a poor bat all season long. Right now only Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp are providing consistent production. Chad Billingsley take the mound for LA tonight. He takes his 11-6 record and 3.73 ERA with him, however, since the break he is 2-2 with a 5.55 ERA in five starts. In his only start against the Cardinals this season he went 5.2 innings allowing 6 runs on 4 hits while also walking 6 batters. Tonight will be tricky for Los Angeles. Usual circumstances would say this game is one the home team will take off a good pitching performance. The problem is, I strongly doubt they can score enough runs. Furcal and Hudson must get on base to set innings up. It will be very interesting to see what happens if the Cards take an early 2-0 lead. Personally, I think the Dodgers continue to struggle..

Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Cardinals are 9-1 in their last 10 games overall while the Dodgers are 3-7. In the last 55 meetings between the two teams St. Louis is 38-17 against Los Angeles. Boggs is no scrub, he is not as good as his counterpart Billingsley tonight but with the way the Cards have been hitting it may just be enough to take the second game of this series and is surely a good value bet.
