MLB Picks: St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers

Written August 17, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz

cardinals-dodgers-preview-081709The Cardinals enter this series against LA coming off a huge comeback win yesterday against San Diego. Down 5-4 headed into the bottom of the ninth, rookie Colby Rasmus hit a three run walk off homer. St.Louis seems to have that extra hop in their step, they have the firepower offensively for the first time in a while. They have won for straight games and have gone 8-2 in their last 10 games. Albert Pujols leads this team and is baseballs best. He has 38 home runs and 104 RBIs on the season. Matt Holliday has 16 homers and 76 RBIs this season but has been a force since coming over from Oakland. Ryan Ludwick is also a major hitting threat while all-star catcher Yadier Molina is hitting .294 from the plate and is baseballs best defensive catcher by a long shot. On the mound tonight is their ace of staff Chris Carpenter. On the season he is 12-3 with a 2.27 ERA. Since the break Carpenter is 5-0 with a 1.91 ERA in six starts. He won his only start against LA this season going 7 innings allowing only 1 run on 9 hits. Look for an even better performance tonight.  Monday’s MLB lines have the Cardinals -147 over the Dodgers with an over/under of 7.5 runs.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are 70-48 which is the best record in the National League. However, they have hit a slight cold patch of late going 4-6 in their last 10 games overall. They are also 12-12 against the NL Central which is their worst record against any NL division. Matt Kemp is their best all-around player, he has 17 homers and 76 RBIs while hitting .311 from the plate. Andre Ethier has been their clutch hitter this year, he has 24 home runs and 80 RBIs. Casey Blake and James Loney have been solid but slacking as of late. On the mound for the Dodgers tonight will be Charlie Haeger making his first start of the season. No situational stats to give out here. The youngster faces a team with two of the best hitters in baseball on it. I do not like his chances. If the Dodgers are to win the game they will need to get a plethora of base runners on but against Carpenter that’s not likely.

Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Cardinals are 22-6 in their last 28 games as the favorite. The Dodgers as stated above are 4-6 in their last 10 games overall. LA has scored more then 3 runs once in their last four games. In the head to head match up, St. Louis is 37-17 against the Dodgers in the last 54 games. Picks below.

Jordan’s Picks: St. Louis Cardinals -147 & UNDER 7.5 Runs (-120)

Jordan’s Premium Picks – A rough Sunday we had losing both of our selections. The profits overall last week were solid and today a new streak begins. Make sure too check out all my selections including the Panthers/Giants game tonight.
