Cardinals Redskins Odds

Written September 19, 2008 by Jimmy Boyd

The Arizona Cardinals do not want to take their foot off the gas pedal as this long-suffering franchise is off to a 2-0 start and feeling very good about the season thus far.  They know a trip to Washington will be no cake-walk and odds makers agree.  JustBet sportsbook has listed the Redskins as 3-point home favorites with the total set at 43.

Just how monumental is it that Arizona won its first two games?  Let us just say that it is the first time in 17 years that the team has accomplished such a feat.  The Arizona Cardinals will look to make it their first 3-0 start since 1974.

Arizona kicked off the 2008 season with a 23-13 win at San Francisco, then pounded Miami 31-10 last Sunday. The Cardinals know the reality of their accomplishment as their first two opponents are a combined 7-29 since the beginning of the 2007 season.

The Cardinals are now 2-0 for the first time since the 1991 season. They haven’t had a longer string of wins to start since opening 7-0 in 1974, when the team was still based in St. Louis.

Dating to last year, Arizona has won four in a row.  The Cardinals’ 54 points in the two games are the most to open the season since they scored 68 in 1985, while the 23 points allowed are the franchise’s fewest to open a season since 1977.  There seems to be a lot in Arizona’s favor here, but the reality is that they need to win against a quality opponent and a victory at Washington this week goes a long way in revealing if the Cards are the real deal.

Much of Arizona’s success can be attributed to the decision to start veteran QB Kurt Warner over Matt Leinart.  Warner was 19 of 24 for 361 yards and three touchdowns last week, showing that the former MVP can still play.  Numbers like those give the Arizona coaching staff no reason to second guess its decision.

The two-time league MVP and Super Bowl XXIV champion is 96 of 145 for 1,227 yards, 10 TDs and two interceptions during Arizona’s four-game winning streak dating back to last season.

A win on the East Coast this week will be huge for Ken Whisenhunts team as they lost all three of their games out east last season, including a 21-19 setback to the Skins.  If you like Arizona to keep right on rolling, bet the Cardinals at BetUS to receive up to a 50% signup bonus.

The Redskins bounce back from an ugly 16-7 loss to the defending Super Bowl champs in week 1 with a thrilling come from behind win against the Saints last week.  Head coach Jim Zorn has to feel good about the progress QB Jason Campbell has already made.  After going just 15 of 27 for 133 yards and one touchdown in week 1, Campbell exploded with a 321 yard performance on 24 of 36 passing.  His 67-yard touchdown pass to Santana Moss with about 3 minutes remaining gave the Skins the win.

Zorn thoroughly enjoyed his first career NFL win as a head coach and he hopes his second come right away this week.  The good news is that he’ll have history on his side.  The Skins have won the last six games in the matchup dating back to 2000.
