Carolina Panthers at New York Giants NFL Odds

Written December 27, 2009 by Black Widow

The Carolina Panthers visit the New York Giants this Sunday in a game between two teams coming off impressive victories. The Panthers beat the Vikings 26-7 in a dominant performance all-around, while the Giants earned a 45-12 victory over the Redskins in a must-win game to keep their playoff hopes alive. Can Carolina play spoiler again Sunday? Or will the G-Men roll to another victory in another must-win spot? NFL odds have listed the Giants -7 over the Panthers with a Total Set of 42.5 points.

Since the Giants are one game behind both the Cowboys and Packers for the final Wild Card spot, they need some help. But they certainly aren’t out of it yet as they own the tiebreaker with Dallas having beaten them twice this season. After opening the season 5-0, it appeared that New York was virtually a lock to make the postseason. But they went on to lose six of their next nine games, and stopped the bleeding by putting the Redskins away on Monday Night Football last week. These teams met in 2008, and the Giants needed a win over Carolina to clinch the #1 seed. New York won that game, 34-28, in overtime behind 301 rushing yards as a team and three rushing touchdowns from Brandon Jacobs. Jacobs needs 166 yards Sunday to reach 1,000 for a third consecutive season. The Giants’ offense has gotten it together, putting up 38.0 points/game and 412 total yards/game in their last 3 contests.

The Giants have the seventh-ranked defense in the league, and they’ll have to try and slow down QB Matt Moore of the Panthers who is coming off a 299-yard passing performance in their 26-7 win over the Vikings last Sunday. He also threw 3 touchdown passes, and hit Steve Smith 9 times for 157 yards. With DeAngelo Williams doubtful to play Sunday, Jonathan Stewart will be carrying the load. Williams rushed for four touchdowns in their last meeting with the Giants, so he will be missed. Eli Manning already has a career-high 26 passing touchdowns this season, and needs 179 yards to set a career-high, so Carolina will have their hands full defensively. Ahmad Bradshaw also chipped in 2 rushing touchdowns last week in perhaps the Giants’ most complete performance of the season. But Carolina has proven they aren’t going to pack it in after one of their better performances of the year last week.
