Carolina Panthers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFL Odds
Written October 18, 2009 by Black Widow
The Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have dominated the NFC South division this decade, but now both are just trying to find their way in 2009. The 1-3 Carolina Panthers won their first game of the season with a 20-17 home win over the Redskins last Sunday, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are trying to earn their first taste of victory after starting the season 0-5. Both desperately need a win when they meet up down in Florida Sunday. NFL odds are available on this game, with Carolina -3 over Tampa Bay and a Total Set of 39.5 points.
The Panthers trailed 17-2 to Washington last week, but rallied by reeling off 18 unanswered points to get the 20-17 victory. Carolina only put up 248 yards of total offense in the win, but they did enough to get the monkey off their back to earn their first victory of the year. Jake Delhomme was a big reason why they won, completing 16-of-25 passes for 181 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also ran for a 1st down on a 3rd-and-long to preserve the victory late. Delhomme was not impressive against the Bucs last year, throwing 5 interceptions to just 1 touchdown as the teams split the season series. But Delhomme is 8-2 in 10 career starts against Tampa Bay. Last year, the Panthers beat the Bucs at home 38-23 as Jonathan Stewart rushed for 115 yards and 2 touchdowns while DeAngelo Williams put up 186 yards and 2 scores as well. Both will try and get on track this Sunday, as the Bucs allow152.6 rushing yards/game which is the fifth-worst defensive average in the NFL.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers try to avoid falling to 0-6 for the first time in 24 years Sunday. The Bucs have been one of the best rushing teams in the NFL this decade, but they are struggling to move the ball on the ground right along with Carolina this season. Tampa Bay ranks 26th in the league with 94.6 rushing yards/game. A lot of pressure is on QB Josh Johnson, who makes just his second NFL start Sunday after completing 26-of-50 passes for 240 yards with 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions in last week’s 14-33 loss to the Eagles. The Panthers had won 5 straight games played at Tampa Bay before the Bucs got sweet revenge with a 27-3 home win on October 12th last year. Antonio Bryant had a big game against the Panthers last year, catching 9 passes for 200 yards and 2 touchdowns. But the wide receiver had been held in check this season, totaling just 12 catches for 141 yards. They need he, Johnson and RB Cadillac Williams to step up this week if they are to end their longest losing streak since 1985.
