Carolina Panthers vs Atlanta Falcons NFL Odds

Written September 19, 2009 by Black Widow

Panthers vs Falcons NFL OddsThe Carolina Panthers are coming off a game they’d like to forget, while the Atlanta Falcons are hoping to build off of a strong defensive performance. The Panthers committed 7 turnovers in an ugly 10-38 home loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, five coming from QB Jake Delhomme. The Falcons were on the right end of the turnover battle last week, forcing Miami into four turnovers en route to a 19-7 victory. Turnovers will certainly play a key role in this big-time NFC South battle in Week 2. NFL lines show the Falcons -6 over the Panthers with a Total Set of 42.5 points.

After finishing 4-12 in 2007, the Falcons were one of the biggest surprises in the league last season by posting an 11-5 record which earned them a trip to the playoffs. Atlanta improved to 8-1 at home since the start of the 2008 season with a 19-7 home win over the Dolphins in Week 1. Matt Ryan got new tight end Tony Gonzalez in the action right away, completing 5 balls for 73 yards and a score to Gonzalez. For the game, Ryan threw for 229 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Atlanta’s defense was the biggest surprise considering they returned only 5 starters from last year’s stop unit. They forced Miami into four turnovers and sacked Chad Pennington four times, keeping the Dolphins off of the scoreboard until a meaningless touchdown with 3:22 remaining in the game.

A team-record seven turnovers by the Panthers put the game out of reach against the Eagles Sunday. Delhomme threw four interceptions and lost a fumble before getting benched in the third quarter. He completed just 7-of-17 pass attempts for 73 yards. He threw five interceptions in their loss to the Arizona Cardinals in the playoffs last year, giving him 11 turnovers in his last two games. Needless to say, that’s not a formula for success. He’ll have to have a short memory if the Panthers are going to give the Falcons a run for their money this week. Delhomme gets the start at the Georgia Dome Sunday mainly because the Panthers don’t have anyone else ready to play. Backup Josh McCown was placed on the IR Monday, and Matt Moore lacks experience. The team did sign A.J. Feeley on Monday, but it will take more than a week for him to grasp the system. Delhomme comes into this game knowing he owned the Falcons last year, throwing for 589 yards and three touchdowns and no turnovers in two meetings with Atlanta in ‘08. Michael Turner rushed for just 65 yards on 22 carries last week, but he has to be licking his chops at the opportunity to face a Panthers’ defense that yielded 185 rushing yards on 32 attempts against Philly last week. Turner rushed for 117 yards and four touchdowns in last year’s 45-28 home win over Carolina.
