The NHL playoffs start tonight and we’ve got NHL analyst Frank Doyle to preview the first round. #8 Chicago v #1 Vancouver Series Odds CHI +190 VAN -263 Game 1 Odds CHI +155 VAN -185     The playoffs begin with the Stanley Cup being Vancouver’s to lose. Who Will Go First in the NHL All-Star Draft? - January 24, 2011

The NHL All-Star Player Fantasy Draft will be held for the first time in league history on Friday, January 28 in anticipation of the All-Star Game in Raleigh, Carolina two days later. The fantasy draft is a new, inventive format for the NHL and one that has hockey fans excited for a game that, frankly, has been growing stale for quite some time. The premise is simple and goes back to the schoolyard or backyard rink when teams were decided by two captains picking the players. The best player...

2011 NHL All Star Game Props - January 20, 2011

Bodog sportsbook just recently put our their proposition bets for this year’s NHL All Star Game.  This year’s showcase of the top hockey players in the world will have one major difference to previous seasons’ events.  The rosters will be drafted by the All-Star players themselves.  There is no East vs. West either, this year the teams have been named Team Lidstrom and Team Staal – after the two selected captains for the game, Nicklas Lidstrom and Eric Staal. Props (or...

2010 NHL Predictions: Philadelphia Flyers - October 15, 2010

Recently it seems the secret to winning the Stanley Cup is getting close enough to taste it. Then using the experience of getting oh so close as motivation to get back and win it. Both Chicago and Pittsburgh came just short of winning the Stanley Cup, before their eventual victories. Can Philly be next? Their run to the Stanley Cup last season re-energized hockey in Philadelphia, bringing a ton of new fans and old ones back to the rink. Not unlike Chicago this transition from a very bad team to cup...

2010 NHL Predictions: Edmonton Oilers - October 13, 2010

The Edmonton Oilers are set to groom the younger generation of the league with some of the best young talent making their squad this season.  They have revamped into a dynamic team that not only shows promise in the future but also promise in the present.  Their first round picks from 2008, 2009 and 2010 were all in the opening day line-up and after seeing Jordan Eberle’s first career NHL goal I know Oiler fans must be smiling at the many great treats the future will bring. The Oilers active...

2010 NHL Predictions: Carolina Hurricanes - October 11, 2010

The Carolina Hurricanes are a huge sleeper coming into this season.  Last year they missed the playoffs and were the worst team in the NHL in the first half of the season. It may come as a surprise, but this is exactly the reason the Hurricanes are one of my highest value teams for the early going of this season. Last year the Carolina Hurricanes were marred by injury unlike anything I have seen, it seemed roughly 1/3 of the team was shelved at one time and those that were healthy just stopped playing....

2010 Chicago Blackhawks - October 7, 2010

After the Blackhawks hoisted the league’s top prize, the reigning Stanley Cup Champions went on an extreme dismantling project that I’m sure had most players wondering when they would get the call telling them to pack their bags.  The core players avoided a move to a new city including Marion Hossa, Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook.  But the one thing that the Blackhawks had over all other teams last season was their immense depth.  Can they compete at...

2010 NHL Predictions: Vancouver Canucks - October 7, 2010

The Vancouver Canucks head into the 2010-11 season with much enthusiasm and hope after the many bright spots in their 2009-10 season.  They earned their second straight Northwest Division title and hit the century mark in points for two consecutive years. Henrik Sedin became the first Canuck to raise the Hart Trophy for the league’s most valuable player to his team.  Other high points of 2010 included the second best home record in the regular season and a January that they dominated...

2010 Ottawa Senators - October 5, 2010

The Ottawa Senators had an interesting off-season for the second year in a row. Star forward Jason Spezza went on record saying we would not mind being dealt, apparently upset at being “booed” at home during the playoffs. The Sens also made a major roster move in acquiring defense-man Sergei Gonchar after letting Anton Volchenkov walk via free agency. Although Sergei Gonchar maybe aging the oft injured journeyman will help the Sens power-play that ranked 21st in the league, last season...

2010 Calgary Flames - September 29, 2010

The management team in Calgary have recently purchased a DeLorean and are set to go back in time with their off-season acquisitions.  Alex Tanguay is back in a Flames uniform after spending the last two seasons back East in Montreal and Tampa Bay.  He had his best season in Calgary where he posted 81 points in the 2006-07 season.  But unfortunately for Calgary the Tanguay of 2006 is not the same as the Tanguay of 2010. He hasn’t been the same player since sustaining a separated shoulder...

2010 Anaheim Ducks Predictions - September 15, 2010

Since winning the Stanley Cup in the 2006-07 season, the Ducks of Anaheim have settled into a downward spiral that mimics a veteran player holding on to a playing career when they should have hung up the skates years ago.  Unfortunately for the Ducks, retirement is not an option.  This is a team that followed up a 110-point season and a Stanley Cup performance four years ago by posting 102 points in 2007-08 and 91 points in 2008-09.  Last season they could only manage 89 points and missed the...

2010 NHL Predictions: Boston Bruins - September 10, 2010

We continue looking at every team in the NHL before the 2010 season with the Boston Bruins. The Bruins finished with a very strong record, 6th overall in the Eastern Conference ahead of both Montreal and Philadelphia, and ended up with the second overall pick in the 2010 NHL entry draft, selecting Tyler Seguin. *Note* Boston acquired this pick via trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs for Phil Kessel. Boston is optimistic about their chances with a good core of returning players and having added more...

Hockey Handicapping - January 29, 2009

Hockey is one of those fringe sports that do not get a lot of attention for most sports bettors, but that goes for the books too.  With so many college basketball and NBA games going on each night, and getting more betting action, the books do not pay as close attention to theNHL.  That means if you know what you are doing, hockey handicapping can put some extra dollars in your bankroll.  Here are some of the sites that I frequent each day in order to get the inside track on betting the games...
