2011 MLB Mock Draft - June 1, 2011

The 2011 MLB Draft is right around the corner and it’s time to start predicting which players will be taken by which teams. The draft starts on June 6th with round one followed by rounds 2-30 on June 7th and rounds 31-50 on June 8th. This first-year player draft isn’t as big around the country as sports like the NFL and NBA simply because there are so many more rounds in the MLB. Still, for the diehard baseball fans this can be a very exciting time of year. I’m going to give my mock draft for...

Handicapping Starters Based on Pitch Counts - May 24, 2011

There are a number of different things to consider when trying to handicap the MLB, but starting pitching seems to be the one tool that everyone uses over any other. It comes as no surprise considering just how important a starting pitcher is the outcome of a game, but anyone who has studied the game knows that simply looking at which starter has performed the best up to this point won’t get you very far. One pitching statistic that seems to be overlooked by even the experts, is the number...

Pitching Luck with Fluke Wins & xERA vs Actual ERA - May 24, 2011

It’s no secret that pitching drives MLB betting, as no player on the field has more control over the game. The problem is that the best pitcher with the best stats isn’t the one who always wins the game. Being able to spot when a starter is going to come out and throw like his record indicates is something a lot of people struggle with. That is why I want to take some time to explain two different methods of determining how a starting pitcher will perform on a given start. Expected ERA...

Betting the Right Key Numbers for MLB Baseball Totals - May 23, 2011

While many people simply like to bet on who they think is going to win the game, their are plenty of experts out there that make a solid profit every MLB season betting totals. Because betting on the money line in the MLB is the popular thing to do, oddsmakers spend the majority of their time setting the line for the games. This doesn’t leave them a whole lot of time to set the total for a given game, which gives you the opportunity to take advantage of their mistakes. While there are numerous...

Handicapping Starting Pitchers Using Team Records - May 23, 2011

Tracking the success of a starting pitcher is a key stat that many handicappers like to use when making their MLB picks, but  because so few starting pitchers last more than 7 innings on a consistent basis, just looking at the overall record of a starting pitcher could get you into trouble. Just about every day you will see a starting pitcher leave the game with a lead after throwing 6-7 strong innings only to see the bullpen come in and blow the lead and the game. While the starting pitcher doesn’t...

Betting MLB Interleague Play - May 20, 2011

Before 1997 teams from the American League and National League would only play against each other if they met in the World Series. There are some that think Interleague play it’s great for the game, and others who don’t like it at all. There are six Interleague series played exclusively in the first half of the season. One problem is the National League has two more teams than the American League. This forces two National League teams to continue to play within their own league. While...

Baseball Revenge Systems - May 13, 2011

The Major League Baseball season is a marathon and one of the biggest problems in handicapping this sport is figuring out when a team is going to show up and give it their best. With a 162-game schedule there are going to be days when teams just don’t have the motivation and focus needed to get the job done. Being able to spot when a team is going to decide to play instead of simply going through the motions, can really go a long way in determining your bank roll at the end of the season. One...

Calculating MLB Baseball Parlay Returns - May 12, 2011

Thinking about betting a baseball parlay, but don’t know if it’s a smart play?  Here is a look at how baseball parlays work and the returns you will receive if you win your bet. For starters baseball parlays are a little different than other parlays. For instance, in basketball and football their are fixed payoffs for the number of plays you make. The reason for that is in those sports the majority of the betting is done on the spread, where the same odds can be found on the favorite...

Betting Big Favorites in Baseball - May 11, 2011

Unlike football and basketball, where the the majority of bets placed are on the spread, in baseball bettors will primarily make their plays on the moneyline. The main objective in baseball is picking which team will win the game, but a high winning percentage doesn’t guarantee a profit at the end of the season. One of the common mistakes that is made when betting baseball is consistently betting big favorites. On just about any given day during the MLB season there will be at least one team...

Handicapping MLB Using Pitchers Last 3 Starts - May 11, 2011

Pitching is one of the main things people like to base their MLB picks off of, and one stat that a lot of people really look into is how a pitcher has performed over his last three starts. While it’s a good idea to get a feel for how a pitcher has been throwing of late, a common mistake that a lot of people make is putting too much emphasis on how a starter has done in his last three outings. If you simply bet the pitcher who has performed better over his last three starts, you are ignoring...

First Inning Bets - May 9, 2011

A lot of people tend to stay away from on betting baseball because they don’t have the patience to sit and watch and entire game. However, there has been a recent shift towards betting the first inning in baseball. Instead of waiting 2-3 hours for a game to finish, you can get your fix in about 20 minutes of action. This bet is becoming more an more popular over the years. I want to take some time to explain how it works, and how you can start making a profit on it right away. The key to this...

Good Pitching vs. Good Hitting - May 9, 2011

One of the largely debated topics in baseball is whether or not good pitching beats good hitting or if good hitting beats good pitching. While it appears that the consensus leans towards pitching being the more dominant factor in determining the outcome of a game, you can’t win without an offense to put runs on the board. I’m going to do my best to explain why neither side has a clear advantage, and why you need to look more into just the pitching and offense when trying to figure out...

Reverse Line Moves in Baseball - May 9, 2011

If you have been betting for a long time you very well know what a reverse line move means and the profits it can lead to. For those of you who don’t know what a reverse line is. I am going to take some time to explain how you can use this information to help you handicap not only baseball, but every sport. Simply put a reverse line is when the betting public has loaded up on one team, only to see the odds go in the opposite direction. Going into more detail, say you have a favorite who opens...

Betting MLB Baseball Totals - May 4, 2011

Looking for an edge when betting the MLB totals?  I have taken the time to go over a number of factors that go into whether or not a game will go over or under. Starting Pitching – To no surprise the first thing you want to look for when betting totals in the MLB is who is starting for each team. The two starters will have arguably the biggest impact on whether or not a game goes over the total. The key statistics you want to look for when breaking down the starting pitching is ERA and WHIP....

Listing Pitchers & MLB Baseball Betting - May 4, 2011

If you have ever bet on baseball you know that the starting pitchers for both teams more times than not decide the outcome of the game. Unlike other sports online sportsbooks give you the option of making a bet on the money line by specifying that your bet is only valid if the scheduled starters for both teams are the ones who actually end up starting the game. This is old news to those that have been betting the MLB odds for years, but if you are new to betting baseball this is something you want...

Hedging MLB Money Line & Run Line Bets - May 4, 2011

A lot of baseball bettors don’t like to lay the huge juice on the favorites, and instead will play the run line. It’s easy to see why so many players get attracted to the 1.5 run line. A favorite who is -150 on the money line, could very well be +150 on the run line. The problem with this bet is if the favorite only wins by one run, you end up going home empty handed. While you don’t lose any juice by playing the run line, it still stings when you just miss out on a big profit....

Baseball Betting Systems for Underdogs - May 2, 2011

The betting public will almost always side with the favorite, but more times than not the value lies in the underdog. This is especially true when handicapping baseball. The extremely long season and countless games without a day off lead to a lot of winning and losing streaks. Years of research have shown that simply betting every favorite will lead to a bigger loss at the end of the season than if you were to bet every underdog. While you will also likely end up in the whole if you were to bet...

Handicapping Umpires for MLB Betting - April 27, 2011

If you want to be a successful MLB handicapper you have to take advantage of any information that will help you win. One thing that I have found very useful in helping me make my MLB plays is keeping track of who is behind the plate. There isn’t anyone who has a bigger effect on the game than the home plate umpire, and getting to know certain umpires tendencies can lead to some big profits. I’m not talking about looking at whether the home or away team wins with a certain umpire behind...

Betting Overnight Lines in Baseball - April 22, 2011

What if I told you that you could greatly increase your baseball betting profits by simply doing your research and getting your bets out the nights before the game. The average bettor will wait until the day of the game to place their bets, but by doing so they are missing out on a key opportunity to maximize their profits. Most sportsbooks will post odds for the following days games the night before the game is scheduled. Taking advantage of these early lines can really work in your advantage. Taking...
