Betting First Five Inning Odds - March 10, 2011

Oh how the game of baseball has changed. We used to see guys like Tom Seaver and Steve Carlton pitch 300-plus innings in a season back in their prime. Ferguson Jenkins was another starter in that category, and he pitched 325 innings with 39 starts and 30 complete games back in 1971. That comes out to an average of more than eight innings per outing. If a starter were to reach 250 innings in a season these days or pitched even 10 complete games, it would be considered a work overload. With how much...

The casual sports bettor can get into some risky business when trying to wager on Major League Baseball for the first time. Spring training has started and the 2011 regular-season is just around the corner. Opening Day is scheduled for Thursday, March 31st. While you won’t see a huge change in the division standings like you will in the NFL, there is enough movement that keeps it interesting, and you can almost always count on a team coming out of no where to contend for a division title and a favorite to disappoint. One thing I always find worth a look in each sport is the win totals that sportsbooks put out before...

Below I will list the odds on every team in both the American League and the National League. I will also give a quick sentence or two on whether or not each squad has a legitimate shot to take down the crown come October. Be sure to check out my MLB predictions to see how I came to these conclusions. Divisional Series: Texas Rangers at Boston Red Sox: (Red Sox Advance) – Not having Cliff Lee to carry them in 2011 will make for an early exit for the Rangers this time...

2011 American League Central Predictions - February 25, 2011

The Minnesota Twins won the AL Central in 2010 for the sixth time in nine seasons. They finished the regular season at 94-68, but would eventually suffer their 12th consecutive postseason loss while getting swept by the New York Yankees. The Chicago White Sox had a solid season and placed second in the division at 88-74. Detroit failed to live up to expectations at 81-81, but finished well ahead of Cleveland (69-73) and Kansas City (67-95). Take a look below to find out how the AL Central plays out...

2011 American League East Predictions - February 24, 2011

The Tampa Bay Rays took down the AL East in 2010 for a second time in three seasons with a 96-66 record. With all the losses they suffered in the offseason, it would be quite an accomplishment for them to overtake the Yankees and Red Sox again. New York earned the wild-card spot while finishing second in the division with a 95-67 record. Boston was plagued by injuries they could never overcome, finishing 89-73. The Toronto Blue Jays had a solid year as far as expectations were concerned, going...

2011 American League West Predictions - February 23, 2011

The Texas Rangers broke through with their best season in franchise history in 2010. The Rangers went 90-72 to run away with the AL West, and went on to win the American League Pennant before losing to the San Francisco Giants in the World Series. The Oakland Athletics were better than expected at 81-81, just ahead of the Los Angeles Angels who finished 80-82. The Seattle Mariners brought up the rear at 61-101. It appears a shift in power is starting to take place in the AL West as the Angels are...

2011 National League East Predictions - February 23, 2011

The Philadelphia Phillies won the the National League East for a fourth consecutive season in 2010 with a record of 97-65. The Atlanta Braves finished six games back of the Phillies, but at 91-71 they earned the NL Wild Card, making it back to the postseason for the first time since they won the division back in 2005. The Florida Marlins finished third with a 81-81 record, while the New York Mets and Washington Nationals both finished below .500. The 2011 season brings new hope for all five teams,...

2011 Texas Rangers Predictions - February 22, 2011

Coming off their best season ever in 2010, the Texas Rangers will try and put together another World Series run this year. Texas won the American League pennant but would eventually fall to the San Francisco Giants in the World Series. It was a season that saw Josh Hamilton win the AL MVP, Neftali Feliez win Rookie of the Year honors, and five players get selected to the All-Star game. Cliff Lee came over last summer to help get the Rangers past the Rays in the ALDS and past the Yankees in the ALCS....

2011 National League Central Predictions - February 22, 2011

The Cincinnati Reds came out of nowhere to win the National League Central in 2010. It was the third straight season a different team has took home the division title. The St Louis Cardinals won it in 2009, while the Chicago Cubs won it back in 2008. One thing hasn’t changed in the division, and that is the lack of postseason success.  The NL Central is 0-12 in the playoffs, since the Cardinals won the World Series in 2006. The Reds won the division by five games over the Cardinals last year,...

2011 National League West Predictions - February 22, 2011

The National League West wasn’t considered by many as a real strong division heading into the 2010 season, but the San Francisco Giants went on to win the division and take home the 2010 World Series Championship. The Giants magical run didn’t come without some help from the San Diego Padres, who looked like they were going to run away with the division after starting 76-49, only to finish 14-23 down the stretch. The Colorado Rockies finished third with a winning record of 83-79, while...

Ranking the 2011 Hitting Lineups - February 22, 2011

To help you get going on the 2011 MLB season, we have ranked each starting lineup based on how we think they will perform this season. To no surprise seven of the top 10 scoring teams were out of the American League last year, as they have a clear advantage with the DH. Offense is a huge indicator in how well a team will perform in the regular season, as all 10 teams finished with a .500 record or better and six of the top 10 teams in runs scored made the playoffs last season, but your World Series...

2011 Philadelphia Phillies Predictions - February 22, 2011

While the Philadelphia Phillies won their fourth straight National League East title, they were unable to get back to the World Series for a third consecutive season, falling to the San Francisco Giant 4-2 in the NLCS. The Phillies went out and added yet another ace to their pitching staff in Cliff Lee, giving them one of the best 1-4 starting rotations in baseball history. Expectations are as high as ever in Philadelphia, and anything less than a World Series trip in 2011 would be a disappointment....

MLB Team Pitching Staff Rankings - February 22, 2011

While you can’t win without scoring, pitching is arguably the most important aspect of the game in determining who wins and loses. The San Francisco Giants led the majors in the regular season with a 3.36 ERA, and went on to win the World Series, but great pitching doesn’t guarantee success. San Diego, Oakland, St. Louis, New York (Mets), and Seattle all finished in the top 10 in ERA, but didn’t even make the playoffs. New York and Seattle both finished with losing records.  The...

2011 Minnesota Twins Predictions - February 21, 2011

The Minnesota Twins have been following a very similar pattern over the last decade. They are the kings of the American League Central, but time and time again they get knocked out in the first round of the postseason. Minnesota’s run of six division titles in nine years gets overshadowed by their 12 straight postseason losses, the second-worst such streak in MLB history. The Twins are 20 years removed from their last World Series title and will be out to prove once again that they can win in October....

2011 Seattle Mariners Predictions - February 21, 2011

Some thought the Mariners had enough talent to win the American League West last season, but instead they turned in one of the more disappointing seasons in history. Seattle went 61-101, to become the first team with a $100 million payroll to lose 100 games. While the blame can be spread throughout the organization, an offense that hit just .236 and posted only 3.2 runs per game, is the main reason why this team struggled. Not a lot was done in the offseason to revamp the offense, meaning it is going...
