Wow, what a fight this should be. You are taking two of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world and putting them in same ring. These two men share very similar characteristics, while they also possess many differences in style and technique. Perhaps the thing they share most in common is their heart. These are two men who have pride for themselves, their country and their greatness. In this article I will break down each fighter from top to bottom and explain why I made the pick I did.

Manny Pacquiao: The best pound for pound fighter in the world currently. An absolute bulldog in the ring that is fast and strong. Standing only 5′6 inches tall, Pacquiao has used his speed and skill to stifle fighters over his championship career. He uses a southpaw style which is unique for a fighter like himself who is so quick. This is the main reason he rarely gets beaten. He’s trained my the legendary Freddie Roach who has been around the ring for a long time. Roach has an excellent reputation as an all-around trainer. He covers all assets from conditioning, strength, diet regiment and his most on point skill is keeping the media frenzy away from his fighters. If there was ever a fight where you can’t allow a let down, it is this one. Now, for everybody that feels this fight is a lock for Manny, I would ease up just a bit and realize these points. With the exception of his 8th round KO of recently retired Oscar De La Hoya who looked non existent, he has not been all that dominant. His previous three fights before Oscar were:

vs David Diaz (weak fighter) Result- 9th round KO

vs Juan Manuel Marquez Result- Split Decision win (Highway robbery, Marquez was the better fighter that night)

vs Marco Antonio Barrera (Aging star) Result- Unanimous Decision (looked very spotty late in the fight)

If he fights this Saturday night like he did in any of those fights, he will get pummeled by Hatton. Another interesting thing to watch for is how Pacquiao will react to the weight he put on for this bout. Beware bettors, Manny is a nice sized favorite and I just don’t see being accurate. Side note, Sylvester Stallone is currently working on a movie with Pacquiao. The last fighter to be in movie preparation during the time of a fight was Antonio Tarver and oh boy, we know how that story went.

Ricky Hatton: “The Hitman” is what this British boxing machine goes by in his home town Stockport/Greater Manchester, England. With a career record of 45-1 (lone loss coming against Floyd Mayweather Jr by way of TKO), Hatton looks to get back on track this weekend at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He has a orthodox style with extreme punching power. He is tough as nails with very good foot movement especially on the outer ropes of the ring. Hatton is trained by what many people feel is the best trainer in the game right now, Floyd Mayweather Sr. Yes that’s right, the father of the man who knocked Hatton out back in December of 2007 is the trainer for the British sensation in what is unquestionably the biggest fight of his career. A major factor will be for Ricky to keep Pacquiao stationary. If he allows Manny to use his speed and connect of three punch combinations and then bail out, Hatton will most likely not be able to have a big enough effect on the fight. Many people look at this fight as two brawlers who will just for go strategy and be warriors. I simply do not see that from a Floyd Sr. fighter. Hatton absolutely must keep Pacquiao moving backwards. If he does he will have enough time to hit him with power punches and that should get him rattled enough to throw wildly. In his recent fights he demolished the “Magic Man” Paulie Mailgnaggi by TKO (corner retirement) and before that he won a unanimous decision over one of the most underrated boxers in the Light Welterweight division in Juan Lazcano. Look below folks but beware, the pick is a doozy.

Haimo’s Hot Notes: Manny Pacquiao is a legendary boxer period. He will go down as one of the better skilled boxers of all time with belts and key victories to back it up. However, I feel he is quite distracted with to many things brewing to focus on his most talented opponent yet. The fact he is working on a movie currently is not being pin pointed here enough. That is a major distraction that is not needed. His last three fights he has struggled with one being a victory he should not have received. This will be a fight where he for once is NOT the stronger fighter and his warrior mentality could prove to be his biggest demon. Ricky Hatton is stronger and from what I have seen, read and heard from numerous sources the much more focused and hungry fighter. Freddie Roach is a fabulous trainer, one of the best. But he is opposed by the best in the sport. Floyd Sr’s instruction in terms of defense and attack mode has sunk in with Ricky, this is his time. Look for the British wonder to make a statement worldwide Saturday night. Two of Pacquiao’s three losses came by way of KO.

Current Odds (Sportsbook.com): Manny Pacquiao -270, Ricky Hatton +210

Jordan’s Pick: Ricky Hatton +210 (10th round KO over Manny Pacquiao)

This Saturday will feature a welterweight title fight between Antonio Margarito and “Sugar” Shane Mosley. The odds makers at BetUS are currently listing Margarito as the heavy -500 favorite with Mosley getting 3-1 odds (read our BetUS sportsbook review to find out why this site is a must have for bonus hunters).

Boxing fans almost didn’t get a chance to see these two square away with Margarito unhappy about the money being split with Mosley 50/50. Margarito felt like he was the bigger draw, and coupled with him being the title holder he should be entitled to more cash. Luckily, HBO stepped up and gave Margarito some additional cash to ease the tensions and keep the fight alive.

Margarito won the welterweight title when he stopped Miguel Angel Cotto in an epic battle that saw plenty of powerful blows being thrown and landed. There is no doubt that Margarito has a strong will to win, has plenty of power, and can take a blow. The slug fest with Cotto was a great fight to watch as both fighters took the best the other had to offer, but Margarito was just too much for Cotto.

The action in the Cotto fight has made Margarito one of the more exciting draws in boxing. People around the boxing world are still talking about his comeback win and just how tough he looked after taking so many powerful Cotto hits.

Mosley is getting older and has slowed down quite a bit. He definitely doesn’t offer as exciting of a style as Margarito does and he is coming off an ugly 12th round knockout over Ricardo Mayorga in September, a fight that he might not have won if it had gone to a decision. It appeared to me that Mosley wasn’t prepared for that fight and had overlooked Mayorga, but he claims that blisters on his right foot hampered his performance.

This fight sort of reminds me of the Manny Pacquiao/Oscar De La Hoya fight a few months ago. You have an aging fighter like De La Hoya taking on a champion that is much younger than him. The results are probably going to be the same here as when De La Hoya took his beating. Cotto beat Mosley back in November 2007, and Margarito stopped Cotto so the thinking is that Margarito should handle Mosley as well. It’s hard for me to argue with that.

With the technical approach Mosley has, a strong will to win, and a great chin I think that this fight will go to a decision. However, Margarito is the better fighter and should come away with an easy win. I’m going to take Margarito and the OVER 10.5 round at BetUS.

Rahman vs. Maskaev will go head to head for the WBC heavyweight championship on August 12, 2006. The fight will be held at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This is an important fight because Rahman holds the last remaining heavyweight belt that is in American hands. If Maskaev is victorious then all of the belts will be held by natives of the former Soviet Union.

This fight is also going to be important to Rahman because he not only wants to defend his belt but revenge a loss suffered to Maskaev back in 1999. Maskaev earned a stoppage in the 8th round after hitting Rahman with a severe overhand right that sent through the ropes and onto the HBO announcer’s table.

Rahman enters this fight as an 11-year pro and at age 33 has seen his good days fly by. Maskaev comes out of Kazakhstan and was a Russian Amateur National Champion who once knocked out Vitali Klitschko in one round.

On Saturday July 5th boxing fans are set for a big time rematch when WBO Light Welterweight Champion of the World Ricardo “Mochuelo” Torres takes on the No. 2 Welterweight Kendall Holt for the 2nd time. These two fighters first squared off in September of 2007 at Country Clubs Salon Jumbo in Barranquilla, but this time the fight is set to take place in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino. In the first fight Torres won by technical knockout in the 11th round to hold on to his belt, but after the fight Holt complained of the crowd throwing things at him and that Torres’s corner attempted to trip him. Either way Torres is still the champ, and Holt will get his shot to prove to everyone he is the better fighter, and its pretty easy to see why many are calling this fight the “No Excuses Rematch.” So with the fight less than 2 weeks away professional handicapper Jason Lowry is ready to make his Torres vs. Holt predictions, but first lets take a closer look at each fighter and how they got to who they are today.

Here are the most current odds thanks to Bodoglife.com
Torres +250
Holt -325

Ricardo “Mochelo” Torres
Torres comes in as a pretty big underdog in this fight, even though he is the guy that won the last fight between these two fighters. Torres first started boxing as a professional in 2001, and started off with a bang, winning 28 straight and knocking out all but 2 of the guys he faced. Then he was matched up against the very good Miguel Cotto for the WBO Light Welterweight title, and ended up losing by knock out. Torres returned to the ring for another shot at the title, but this time it was against Mike Arnaoutis, as the belt was vacated by Cotto. Torres was able to barely beat Arnaoutis by decision, but he was now the champion he had dreamed of. Since that win he has defended his title twice, the first coming against Arturo Morua and then most recently against Holt. So there is no doubt that this Columbian fighter has plenty of power and the talent to retain the belt, so with so many giving the edge to Holt it might light a fire inside Torres to come out and win this fight.

Kendall Holt
Holt is born and raised out of Patterson, New jersey and has put together a pretty impressive career as well. So far he is 23-2 with 12 wins by knock out. Holt really believes that he should have won the first fight against Torres, and seems to be pretty pissed off about the whole deal. Since his fight with Torres Holt went on to fight Ben Tackie in February of this year, and walked away with majority decision win. Tackie like Torres was probably stronger puncher than Holt, but Holt showed great speed and ability to land multiple counter punches for every one punch Tackie threw. With the fight in the US there is no question that Holt will be given a fair shot this time, no matter what happened in the last fight. We look for this to be on hell of a fight, and expect Holt to use the same strategy against Torres as he did against Tackie.

Winner: Kendall Holt – 325
While we didn’t expect the fight to be favored so heavily in one corner, there is no question that many of the odds makers feel that Holt is going to punish Torress and become the new WBO Light Welterweight Champion. We are right on board, as we see Holt easily winning this fight. While it might not end in a knock out for Holt, there is a good chance if this thing goes the distance he will win by decision.

If you are looking to place a bet on this fight, be sure to head over to Bodoglife.com now and get an account up and going today. Be sure to check back for more boxing previews and prediction, also you might want to check out Jason Lowry’s UFC 86 previews and predictions as well.

On Saturday May 24th Manchester Stadium in Manchester, Great Britain will be hosting a duo of solid fights as Ricky Hatton puts his IBO light welterweight title on the line against Juan Lazcano. Hatton will be fighting in front of a home crowd and is the big favorite coming into the fight. The fight is set to air as part of HBO’s boxing special, but if you are looking to catch it live you might have to adjust your schedule, as the fight is set to air around 5PM Est. in the U.S. While we are simply going to preview this fight it is worth mentioning that the undercard will have Paul Malignaggi taking on Lovemore N’dou. Many people believe that Malignaggi will be a likely candidate for Hatton if he is able to pull off the win. Here is a closer look at each fighter and our prediction on who we think will come out on top.

Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton -1100 at Bodoglife.com

There is no question that Hatton is one of the best light welterweight fighters in the business as his overall record coming into this fight is 43-1 with 33KOs. But Hatton is coming off a fresh loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. where he was beat by TKO in the 10th round. While Hatton feels that the ref was impartial and caused him to struggle in the fight, a loss is a loss and he needed a solid opponent to fight and get back to his winning ways. Hatton is calling this a “thank you” fight for his hometown fans, and marks the first time he has fought outside the U.S. since 2005 when he also fought in Manchester. He was able to knockout Kostya Tszyu in the 11th round and is hoping for a repeat outcome this weekend. While Lazcano isn’t a very big name he is ranked 12th in the IBF. The only things that concern us about Hatton is getting back in the ring after suffering his first loss by TKO, and that he might come into the fight a little out of shape. Hatton should win, but will leave it to the gloves to find out who comes out on top.

Juan Lazcano + 600 at Bodoglife.com

Lazcano is a Mexican fighter that from Sacramento, California, and is currently 37-4-1 in his career with 27 knockouts. While his knockouts might suggest that this guy has some real power, almost all of them have come against lower level opponents. Hatton will be the toughest opponent he has ever faced and will need to fight the fight of his life if he wants to pull of the huge upset this weekend. Lazcano’s 3 most recent losses have come by the hands of Vivian Harris, Jose Luis Castillo, and Golden Johnson. All who we feel Hatton would destroy. If Lazcano is able to keep this fight respectable and avoid getting knocked out we feel like it would be a great fight for the guy.

Winner: Hatton -1100 at Bodoglife.com

Hatton is just a bettor all around fighter than Lazcano, who has spent the majority of his career fight no names. Hatton wants this fight so he can get a shot at Malignaggi and his IBF light welterweight title, and also a possible shot at the winner of the Floyd Mayweather vs. Oscar de la Hoya fight.

On Saturday May 3rd one of boxing biggest attractions will be making his first appearance of the year. Oscar De La Hoya is set to square of with Steve Forbes in Los Angeles. This will mark the first time De La Hoya will fight in Los Angeles since 2000. While many people are speculating that De La Hoya is just using this fight to prepare for a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr., who he lost to back in May of last year. Forbes also adds to the publicity of the fight; as he was a finalist on the Season 2 of the hit ESPN TV show the Contender. Since Forbes bring a much similar style to the ring as Mayweather Jr., it seems to be that De La Hoya is seeking revenge. Though that will all go for nothing if he is unable to beat Forbes who is no slouch himself. So lets take a little closer look at each fighter, and then we will give you our prediction on the outcome of the fight.

Oscar De La Hoya (38-5, 30KOs) -2000 at Bodoglife.com

Everyone loves it when De La Hoya gets in the ring, as he is arguable the sports biggest non-heavyweight star. Nicknamed “The Golden Boy” from his big win for the U.S. in the Barcelona Olympic Games. De La Hoya has that great ability to send his opponent to the floor with devastating knockout punches. De La Hoya is a Super Welterweight boxer from East Los Angeles and has just recently turned 35. De La Hoya started off his professional boxing career going 31-0 and his first loss came by the hands of the very good Felix Trinidad, in a fight many people believed De La Hoya had won. Then a little over a year later he lost for the second time to Shane Mosley. Some big fights that De La Hoya has won over the past 5 years is a TKO against Fernando Vargas, a unanimous decision against Felix Sturm, and a TKO against Ricardo Mayorga. It is also a good side note that Floyd Mayweather Sr. will be back with De La Hoya as his trainer for this fight; also there is speculation that this will be the final year of boxing for De La Hoya.

Steve Forbes (33-5, 9KOs) +1000 at Bodoglife.com

While Forbes gained almost all of his popularity thanks to the “Contender”, he isn’t completely out of this fight. His record can be a little misleading, as it seems very similar to that of De La Hoya, but the level of competition heavily favors De La Hoya. One thing that Forbes has on his side is that people are saying that he has a very similar style to that of Mayweather Jr. With that style working pretty impressively in the first fight between De La Hoya and Mayweather Jr., it’s not to far stretched to say it wont play a role in this fight. While there is no question that Forbes is no where near the fighter of Mayweather Jr., his trainer is part of the Mayweather family and could really help Forbes chances of pulling off the huge upset.

Winner: Oscar De La Hoya -2000 at Bodoglife.com

We aren’t going to give you a big shocker on this fight, as we just don’t see Forbes being able to beat De La Hoya. What will be interesting if Forbes is able to use his Mayweather like style and compete in this fight, if he can’t it just might end up being a TKO victory for De La Hoya. If you like underdogs then maybe you risk a little on Forbes, but we believe you are just throwing money away.

If you are looking to place a bet on this fight be sure to head over to Bodoglife.com and get your bet in on the fight.

On Saturday April 19th boxing fans are set to see Bernard Hopkins take on Joe Calzaghe at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas. This World Championship Boxing event is part of an HBO Sports presentation, and is exclusively on HBO. This fight has been years in the making but the two never seemed to get it to work out, making it all the more exciting. Hopkins is one the sports biggest names as he has been fighting for 20 years, and Calzaghe is man yet to be beaten in 44 fights. Though this fight is coming late in both of these guys career, this should still be a great fight to watch. Here is a little information on each fighter, and our prediction of the fight.

Bernard Hopkins (48-4-1, 32KOs) +180 at Sportsbook.com

This 43-year-old fighter is one of the best middleweight champions to ever step foot in the ring. During his time as a middleweight he beat the names of Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya. But what might have been even more impressive was when Hopkins moved to light heavyweight and was able to beat Antonio Tarver in June of 2006. After a short retirement Hopkins defeated former light middleweight champion Ronald “Winky”Wright in July of 2007. This is the last fight Hopkins has had leading up to his fight against Calzaghe. Other than holding numerous middleweight champions and the Right Light Heavyweight with his win against Tarver, Hopkins has been name the pound for pound # 1 Boxer in 2004-2005 and Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year in 2001.

Joe Calzaghe (44-0, 32KOs) -230 at Sportsbook.com

This 35-year-old Super Middleweight Champion is a machine in the ring and in order to fight Hopkins will be making his first attempt at fighting as a light heavyweight. The man known as “The Pride of Wales” will also be making his first trip to fight in the United States. He has been unbeatable in the ring and is currently riding a record-tying streak of 21 straight super middleweight title defenses. His last fight came against Mikkle Kessler in November of last year for the unification of the WBO,WBA,WBC, and Ring Magazine super middleweight titles. Calzaghe was able to win by unanimous decision and became the first undisputed super middle champion of the world. With age the knockouts have gone down, to start his career he knocked out 21 of his first 22 opponents. While in his last 20 fights, he has only been able to knockout 9 of them.

Winner: Joe Calzaghe -230 at Sportsbook.com

If only this fight had been earlier on when both these fighters were knock out specialist and at any moment could send their opponent to the floor. While this fight is still going to be close and will likely go the distance. We like the younger Calzaghe here to take home the victory and continue his unbeaten career. We really don’t see a knockout happening here, but we do see Calzaghe winning by unanimous decision.

Boxing fans are set for a full day of action as there are four big fights taking place this Saturday April 12th. With two fights going down in Jersey, and two more in Tampa, FL. One of the big fights this weekend will see Chad “Bad” Dawson vs. Glen “Gentlemen” Johnson. They are one of the two big fights taking place in Tampa at the St Pete Times Forum. The WBC light heavyweight title will be up for grabs when these two guys square off this weekend. Chad Dawson comes in as the big favorite this week as expected when you are undefeated and the holder of a championship belt. That doesn’t mean this won’t be a fight, as Johnson should put a solid fight. Here is a look at both fighters and what they are bringing to the fight, and our prediction on who will walk away the winner in Tampa.Chad Dawson -360 at Sportsbook.com

Dawson was born in South Carolina, but has made Connecticut his home. He comes in with a 25-0 record with 1 no contest and 17 of his wins coming by knockout. The reason for the no contest came back in 2004 after he was suspended for 6 months for drug problems. This didn’t seem to slow the guy down, as he has came back and looks stronger than ever. Johnson is only 25 and captured the WBC light heavyweight title back in 2007 at the age of 24, when he beat the undefeated Tomasz Adamek. This will mark his third title defense and will be tested by the veteran Johnson. So at such a young age there is still a lot ahead of Dawson and with another victory he could be setting himself up for a real test against a boxer such as Antonio Tarver.

Glen Johnson +280 at Sportsbook.com

The Jamaican born Johnson is no slouch himself as he comes in with a 47-11-2 record, with 32 of those wins coming by knock out. While he might be past his prime this former IBF light heavyweight champion, has knocked out the likes of Roy Jones Jr. in 2004, when he took home the USA Today Fighter of the Year honors. Johnson has also beat the likes of Clinton Woods and Antonio Tarver, who both will be fighting for that same IBF light heavyweight title that Johnson once held. So there is no doubt that Johnson is a very capable fighter, and could take home the victory this weekend. He is coming in winning his last 3 fights all by knock out. The 39 year old would love to end Dawson’s winning streak and give him his first loss of his professional career.

Winner: Glen Johnson +280 at Sportsbook.com

We are going with the upset here in Johnson. We think that the old guy has a couple big fights left in the tank, and will be able to out box the young stud in Chad Dawson. The experience factor is easily in the favor of Johnson; we also like the talent that Johnson has went up against in his career compared to that of Dawson. This will be the best fight of the weekend. We see Johnson winning by split decision and regaining his IBF title.

Sportsbook.com has all your boxing betting needs.
The WBA Welterweight Championship will be up for grabs this weekend when Miguel Angel Cotto will defend his title against Alfonso Gomez. The fight is set to take place at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ on April 12th. This will not be the only big fight taking place at Boardwalk Hall, as Antonio Margarito will be fighting Kermit Cintron in a rematch bout that took place back in 2005. The fight between Cotto and Gomez might be a little closer than people might think. As many fans might remember Gomez was on the first season of ESPN’s Contender, and is still trying to prove himself to the boxing world. With that said lets take a look at both boxers and what they are bring to the table this weekend, and our expert pick of the fight.

Miguel Angel Cotto -850 at Sportsbook.com

Cotto is coming into the fight at 31-0 with 25 knockouts, and a huge favorite to win the fight this weekend. Cotto has been impressive ever since stepping in the ring. He was able to win the WBA welterweight title when he defeated previously undefeated Carlos Quintana in December of 2006. He has successfully defended the title three times since winning it, and his most impressive win came in November of 2007 when he won by unanimous decision of Sugar Shane Mosley at Madison Square Garden. Cotto has been impressive as both a lightweight and a welterweight, and doesn’t look like he will be slowing down anytime soon. Cotto is a beast in the ring; it will take everything Gomez has to make this a fight.

Alfonso Gomez +550 at Sportsbook.com

While Gomez didn’t win the Contender title when he was on the show, he gained a lot of exposure and moved up the rankings. Gomez is still a little inexperienced as he is has only fought 23 fights. He is currently 18-3-2, with 8 of his wins coming by knockout. Gomez has yet to lose since losing in the semi-finals on the Contender to Peter Manfredo Jr. He has rolled off seven straight victories with the most recent coming against Ben Tackie. So while Gomez is definitely coming in as a huge underdog, this could be Gomez’s chance to shine and really put his name on the map.

Winner: Alfonso Gomez +550 at Sportsbook.com

This was a close call for us, as we really like what Gomez is bringing to the fight. While the safe bet is of course Cotto, as he will most likely take home the victory. Since we believe that this is going to a closer fight than what the odds might show. It might be a better play to put a small bet on Gomez, than a huge bet on Cotto, and hope for an upset. If you are looking for the safe bet and you got a lot of cash to spare, put your money on Cotto, but if you are like us take the underdog and his great odds in a small bet to win big.

In a weekend full of great boxing matchups we head to Atlantic City, NJ on April 12 for a battle between Kermit “El Asesino” Cintron vs. Antonio “Tijuana Tornado” Margarito. This is a much-anticipated rematch between the two fighters. In the first bout Margarito dominated Cintron and won in 5 rounds due to the fight being stopped. Many people believed that this fight would never take place due to the beat down Cintron received in the first matchup. This is not the only big fight taking place at Boardwalk Hall as Miguel Cotto and Alfonso Gomez will also be doing battle. But for now lets just take a look at the fight between Margarito and Cintron. Here is a breakdown of each fighter and our prediction of who will come out on top.

Antonio Margarito -300 at BetUS

Margarito will come into the fight with a 35-5 record, with 25 of them coming by knock out. Margarito has gone 3-1 since the first fight against Cintron in April of 2005. His only loss came against a very tough Paul Williams by decision. The lost to Williams cost Margarito the WBO welterweight title after he had successfully defended the title 7 times after winning it back in 2003 against Andrew Lewis. Margarito is a very powerful fighter that has a proven chin and is feared by many boxers because of his power and ability to tire his opponents out before landing a big blow.

Kermit Cintron +240 at BetUS

Cintron comes into the fight with a very impressive 29-1 record, and an outstanding 27 knockouts. Cintron has won 5 straight fights since the beating he received from Margarito. Cintron doesn’t have many people thinking he has a chance in a rematch, but you have to give the kid credit for wanting to prove the first fight was a fluke. Cintron will be most likely out matched by Margarito, and will have to rely on his power, and hope that he can land a big blow to Margarito and send him to the floor. When you look at Cintron you think he has to be better than his showing because of his great record, but he has fought a lot of cup cakes along the way. It will be one of the bigger upsets in boxing history if he is able to pull it off. Just don’t go getting crazy and betting the bank on this guy.

Winner: Antonio Margarito -300 at BetUS

While we really admire what Cintron is trying to do here, we just don’t see how he would be able to improve that much over a couple years. Margarito is one of the most feared welterweight fighters in the game, and you have to believe Cintron is a bit crazy for wanting to get back in the ring after what happened to him last go around. This fight might go a little longer than last time, but don’t expect a different outcome. We are predicting Margarito to win via knockout in round 7.
