2009-10 Orlando Magic Predictions

The Orlando Magic will look to build upon last year’s “magical” season, which consisted of a surprising trip to the Eastern Conference finals. Dwight Howard and the boys should be just as strong this year, if not stronger, considering some of the wheeling and dealing that GM Otis Smith took part in this past summer. They did lose some big timers in Hedo Turkoglu and Courtney Lee, but welcome veteran Vince Carter. Therefore, this team’s success should ultimately rely on how well this team... 

2009-10 Minnesota Timberwolves Predictions

Things have been going downhill for the Minnesota Timberwolves for several years now, but they are at least trying to make a change, and any change at this point is a step in the right direction.  Kevin McHale is out, David Kahn is in and the difficult process of trying to build this team into a contender again begins.  It hasn’t exactly started out well for Kahn, who used the Wovles’ first round draft pick this year to select Spanish star Ricky Rubio, who will likely never play basketball... 

2009-10 Utah Jazz Predictions

It’s tough to figure out what to make of the Utah Jazz.  This team made the Western Conference Finals in 2007 with most of the same guys on the roster, but last year they were bounced in the first-round of the playoffs by the Lakers without much of a second thought.  Last year they did have to work their way through injury problems, but I don’t know if they have the talent to compete with the star-studded lineups of the Lakers and Spurs this year.  The NBA odds makers seem to agree... 

2009-10 Oklahoma City Thunder Predictions

The Oklahoma City have been labeled an up-and-coming team, even though they compiled a 23-59 record a year ago.  The biggest reason is that after they started the year 3-29 the team still bounced back to go 20-30 over their final 50 games instead of packing it in.  All of there young stars have been working hard, which has led management to think promising things are coming in the not-too-distant future.  The NBA odds makers don’t think the Thunder will make it over the hump quite yet, as... 

2009-10 San Antonio Spurs Predictions

The San Antonio Spurs were good enough to win 54 games a year ago, but after a first round playoff loss to the Dallas Mavericks this team realized they needed to get better, and did so in a big way when they landed Richard Jefferson from the Milwaukee Bucks.  San Antonio also gave themselves another option down low by getting Antonio McDyess, turning them into a serious title contender in 2009-10.  The NBA odds makers seem to agree with me as the season total win projections have been set at 54.5. ... 

2009-10 New Orleans Hornets Predictions

There were high expectations for the New Orleans Hornets entering last season, but too many injuries for a team that was too thin already led to a disappointing first round exit from the playoffs.  Can this team bounce back to the form that helped them take the division two years ago?  Probably not as I’m seeing their season going much the same as it did last year with the NBA odds makers latest projections showing them at 46.5 wins.  The Hornets are also 25-to-1 to win the Western Conference... 

2009-10 Memphis Grizzlies Predictions

The Memphis Grizzlies have had three horrible years in a row, but with the experience that rookies OJ Mayo, Marc Gasol and Darrell Arthur were able to get a year ago, this team could make a little bit of a jump in 2009-10.  The NBA odds makers don’t necessarily think they will be great as the team is slotted for 27.5 total wins, but that is an increase over the 24 from a season ago.  The odds on Memphis winning the West currently sit at 100-to-1 right now, with the odds to win the NBA Finals... 

2009-10 Houston Rockets Predictions

The Houston Rockets could be in for a long season.  There isn’t another team in the league that has been hit quite as hard with injuries as this team, losing Yao Ming for what is likely to be the entire season, and Tracy McGrady for a good portion of it.  Add in losing Ron Artest to the LA Lakers and the team is without any of the superstars they had last season.  That is part of the reason why the NBA odds makers have set their season win total projections so low, coming in at 36.5.  The... 

2009-10 Dallas Mavericks Predictions

The Dallas Mavericks could be a team that sneaks up on people this season.  They went out and added a solid group of three veterans in Drew Gooden, Shawn Marion, and Tim Thomas to go with an already loaded lineup that includes Dirk Nowitzki, Josh Howard, and Jason Kidd.  This team went 50-32 a year ago and there is no reason to believe they can’t be just as good, if not better, in 2009-10.   The NBA odds makers think they’ll be just under that mark, setting their season win total...

There are a lot of people really high on the Washington Wizards this season, but it’s tough for me to really get behind a team that won 19 games a year ago and call them a contender.  Sure Gilbert Arena played in only two games, but Antawn Jamison was there for 81 and Caron Butler played in 67.  The moves they did make to trade for Randy Foye and Mike Miller are not bad at all, but not exactly a blockbuster that is going to take them over the top.  The NBA odds makers seem to agree with...

The Portland Trail Blazers will look to build off of last year’s success when they finished in a tie for first in the Western Conference’s Northwest division with the Denver Nuggets.  The Blazers lost in the first round of the playoffs in six games to the Houston Rockets, but this is a young team with a lot of room to improve.  Picking up veteran point-guard Andre Miller in the offseason filled a big need for the Blazers, who will also hopefully get a healthy season out of center Greg...

The Charlotte Bobcats haven’t had a lot of success in their five year existence, but things seem to be headed in the right direction under second-year coach Larry Brown.  This team has made a flurry of moves since he arrived and now has a tough minded, defensive squad that will allow them to compete in quite a few games.  What the team lacks though is a superstar, which is why they will be a bubble team when it comes to making the playoffs.  With the latest NBA odds the Bobcats are 75-to-1... 

2009-10 Denver Nuggets Predictions

The Denver Nuggets took some huge steps in the right direction last year, including finally finding someone to dump Allen Iverson to in the Detroit Pistons, plus picking up Chauncey Billups in the process.  The addition of Billups elevated the play of superstar Carmelo Anthony and eventually helped land the Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals, where they lost to the eventual NBA Champion Los Angeles Lakers.  The Lakers will again be the biggest obstacle for Denver to make it to the Finals,...

The Atlanta Hawks have made a steady improvement in each of the past five seasons and with some key additions and all the major pieces coming back, there is no reason to think they can’t make another jump from the 47 wins they racked up in 2009-10.  The NBA odds makers don’t really seem to agree with me though, as the over/under win projections is at 44.5.  Their betting lines to win the East stand at 25-to-1 while their chances to win the Finals are 50-to-1. 2009-10 Chicago Bulls Predictions

Chicago Bulls fans have a lot to be excited about heading into this season.  The team finished strong down the stretch by winning 12 of their last 16 games to make the post-season, then they took the Boston Celtics to seven games before bowing out.  Sure, the team lost Ben Gordon, who led the team in scoring the past four seasons, and a deal for Carlos Boozer fell through but the rise of Derrick Rose and solid play down the stretch fro Joakim Noah makes me think this team has a bright future. ...

The days of the Sacramento Kings being a contender out West are a distant memory.  Arco Arena used to be one of the toughest places to play, but the fans stayed at home instead of heading in to watch a team that went 17-65 overall and 11-30 at home.  Things didn’t go much better when searching for a new head coach as the team ended up with Paul Westphal after being shunned by Eddie Jordan and Kurt Rambis.  They are projected by the NBA odds makers to be one of the worst teams again this...

The Phoenix Suns were supposed to be heading into rebuilding mode when they shipped Shaquille O’Neal over to the Cleveland Cavaliers this summer, but the team went ahead and extended Steve Nash’s contract by a couple of years and resigned Grant Hill.  Management also said that as long as Amar’e Stoudemire proved he could stay healthy they would extend his deal at the beginning of the season.  Even so, the NBA lines makers aren’t all that confident in this team as Phoenix... 

2009-10 LA Lakers Predictions

The LA Lakers come into this season with a huge target on their backs.  Not only did they win the NBA Finals last season, but they are also stacked with talent and favored to bring home the hardware again next June.  This team could be even better with Ron Artest replacing Trevor Ariza and with Andrew Bynum once again healthy to start the season.  The question marks are if Bynum can stay healthy and if Artest can fit in.  The NBA odds makers obviously think so as the Lakers are -3000 favorites... 

2009-10 LA Clippers Predictions

The LA Clippers have been in the basement of the league for more than their fair share of time, but there is hope for this team as they have a bunch of young talent.  The latest addition was with the No. 1 pick in last summer’s NBA draft, where they opted for Blake Griffin out of Oklahoma.  I suppose that was the good news during a year in which they put up a 19-63 record while being outscored by almost double digits every game.  The NBA odds makers aren’t seeing a big jump right away...

The pressure is on the Toronto Raptors to get off to a fast start this season.  Chris Bosh is expected to opt out of his contract at the end of the season, and he’ll be one of the sought after guys in a class that could include LeBron James and DeWayne Wade.  I think this team has plenty of weapons to contend in the East, but if things don’t start out well the team might be forced to trade Bosh instead of losing him to free agency and being left with nothing in return.  The NBA odds...

The Mike D’Antoni era in New York did not start out as smoothly as some had hoped, but to me there was plenty to be happy about.  This team won 32 games compared to 23 the year before, all while dealing with Stephon Marbury sitting out and Eddy Curry playing just three games.  The team set a record with 23 players seeing floor time, so the transition year wasn’t easy to D’Antoni’s up-tempo style.  This team still doesn’t have a load of talent, but I love D’Antoni...

There isn’t a lot of hoping coming out of New Jersey for the upcoming 2009-10 season.  For the second straight year the Nets dealt a superstar away in order to cut costs and to clear room to make a run at a big free agent next summer.  Last year it was Richard Jefferson, this year they sent Vince Carter to Orlando in exchange for Courtney Lee, Rafer Alston and Tony Battie.  There is still plenty of talent on this team as the team has high hopes for Lee, Devin Harris, and Brook Lopez.  However,...

Allen Iverson to Greece?

NBA Odds Updated for Okafor-Chandler Trade

The Sporting News reports that a trade between the Charlotte Bobcats and the New Orleans Hornets involving Emeka Okafor and Tyson Chandler has been finalized.  There are no clear details as to the conditions of the trade, but it does appear that Okafor will be with the Hornets next year, while Chandler will be a Bobcat. This should be a good move for the Hornets, who need to free up some cap room to be sure they can keep Chris Paul around as long as they possibly can.  The move is also a pretty... 

Lakers vs Heat: Who Gets Lamar Odom?

Yahoo! Sports is currently reporting that their sources say that Lamar Odom is leaning toward signing with with Miami Heat.  Nothing is final, but it seems the Heat have become the front-runners in the negotiations for Odom. Laker’s owner, Jerry Buss, originally offered Odom a four-year $36 million contract, with $30 million of that guaranteed, however, has since pulled the offer from the table.  The offer from Miami is reportedly for five years and $34 million, or a four-year deal for less...

Remember the story where Xaiver college basketball player, Jordan Crawford dunked on NBA superstar Lebron James at the Lebron James Skills Academy, but how the video was confiscated by Nike officials?  Well, apparently someone had their mobile phone camcorder running and they’ve gotten the video of Jordan Crawford dunking on Lebron James at TMZ. First of all, the quality of the video is pretty poor, and there’s no real telling exactly who you are seeing in the video.  I had to watch... 

NBA Power Rankings: Summer 2009

I was taking a look at the Hoop Doctors NBA Power Rankings for the Summer of 2009 and feel like it’s a pretty quality read.  Of course I have some beef with their selections but when you are thinking about the NBA in July you can’t really see who is playing well out on the court, you are only left with talking about it. It starts off with the San Antonio Spurs being the top team, which I have to disagree with.  This team is getting old with Duncan and Ginobili being past their prime....

It looked as though the Orlando Magic were going to tie the series 2-2, but a big 3-pointer from Derek Fisher and another poor performance in overtime have the Magic with their backs against the wall and the Los Angeles Lakers just one game away from another NBA Championship. With a 108-104 win in game 3, the Orlando Magic have made sure the Los Angeles Lakers will not completely run away with the NBA Finals. After suffering a heartbreaker in game 2 , the Magic responded to shoot an NBA playoff record 62.5% from the floor, and what was more impressive was that 5 different Magic players scored 18 points or more.
