Calgary at Edmonton Free NHL Picks

The Calgary Flames have the offense in motion early as they have clicked for 13 goals in their first three games, leading to a perfect 3-0 start. One of those three wins was in Edmonton. The Oilers got a shootout win in their last time on the ice vs. Dallas, but the concern here is the four goals allowed in each of the first two. The Flames? offense has been on fire, and Edmonton is just 1-4 in their last five as a home chalk. The Flames have owned the Northwest Division at 15-6 in their last 21, and their win in Edmonton already this season means that they have now taken four of the last five meetings over the Oilers. This looks like a live dog, playing well, so I’ll side with Calgary. If you want to bet on hockey, then take a look at Bookmaker which has a 20%d signup bonus!

John Ryan on the other hand is going with Edmonton -110: Ai Simulator 3* graded play on Edmonton as they host Calgary set to start at 9:30 EST. Supporting this graded play are a few HC angles. Note that Pat Quinn is a solid 174-146 against the money line (+40.3 Units) when playing against a team with a winning record in all games he has coached since 1996; 71-45 against the money line (+27.9 Units) when playing against a team with a winning record in the first half of the season in all games he has coached since 1996. Have to admit that I am not sure who or how they put the NHL schedule together, but this marks the second time that Calgary is visiting Edmonton. Nevertheless, the AiS shows an 88% probability that Edmonton will score 3 or more goals in this game. Note that Edmonton is a solid 22-1 making 16.8 units in games where they score 3 goals over the past 3 seasons. Take Edmonton.

Patrick Kane vs 62-Year-Old Cab Driver

Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane allegedly became outraged and slugged a 62 year cab driver when the cabbie couldn’t provide him with 20 cents in change. The Huffington Post reports that Kane and his cousin have been charged with felony robbery and misdemeanor counts of theft of services and criminal mischief. Kane has since pleaded not guilty to all charges.

In the police report describing the incident, the driver reported that both Kane, 20 and his cousin, 21, punched and hit him because he didn’t have the 20 cents in change he was owed for his payment for the ride.

This is an odd story to say the least, and, if true, one of the dumbest athlete crimes I’ve heard of in a long time, maybe ever. Kane was the first overall pick in the 2007 NHL draft, and signed an $875,000 contract (the highest allowed for NHL rookies). Why he would become so upset over not getting his full change back is up for speculation, but it’s hard to believe that alcohol wasn’t involved considering the incident happened around 4 a.m. Of course everything is just speculation until we get some more detailed reports, but this just isn’t good for Kane or the Chicago Blackhawks.

We will have to wait and see if the NHL will hand down any form of suspension, or if Kane will miss any time due to legal trouble resulting from the incident. Any long-term loss would definitely be a blow to the Blackhawks, who the NHL odds say are tied as the 3rd favorite to win the Stanley Cup in 2010 at +800 odds, behind only the Red Wings (+400) and Penguins (+600)

Blackhawks at Red Wings Game 5

The Western Conference final could come to an end when the Red Wings and Blackhawks meet up in Chicago for Game 5. The Red Wings won Game 4 by a score of 6-1 on Sunday to take a 3-1 series lead and are one win away from returning to the Cup final. The Wings posted Sunday’s blowout win despite playing without Nicklas Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk. Lidstrom was a surprising late scratch due to a lower-body injury, while Datsyuk missed his second game in a row because of a sore foot. Detroit is definitely the favorite here with the Red Wings listed at -240 over at BetJamaica Sportsbook.

With Detroit’s two stars sidelined Marian Hossa and Henrik Zetterberg both stepped up. Hossa had three points with a pair of goals and an assist while Zetterberg also netted a pair, giving him nine in the postseason. Valtteri Filppula also had three points with a goal and two assists, and Chris Osgood made 18 saves before sitting out the third period due to dehydration. The Blackhawks were also shorthanded in Game 4 with starting goalie Nikolai Khabibulin out with an undisclosed lower-body injury. Cristobal Huet got the start, but ended up getting pulled in favor of rookie Corey Crawford after letting in five goals. Jonathan Toews scored Chicago’s lone goal and Martin Havlat did suit up for Game 4 despite being on the receiving end of a vicious hit in Game 3 that knocked him out cold. Penguins at Hurricanes Game 4

After a day off on Monday hockey returns to the ice Tuesday night with Game 4 of the Eastern Conference final. The Carolina Hurricanes must win on Tuesday or their playoff ride is over, down 0-3 to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Pens put the Hurricanes on the brink Saturday night with a 6-2 blowout win. Evgeni Malkin had a three-point night with two goals and an assist, while Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist. Malkin padded his league-leading playoff point total to 28, while Crosby is right behind him with 26 points. Bill Guerin also tallied two points with a goal and an assist, while Marc-Andre Fleury made 32 saves in the win. Matt Cullen and Sergei Samsonov found the back of the net for Carolina in the loss and Cam Ward stopped 34 of 39 shots. NBA Betting – The Magic can go up 3-1 on the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals on Tuesday night if they can pick up a second straight home win over LeBron James and company. Orlando got 24 points and nine rebounds from Dwight Howard on Sunday as they surged to a 99-89 win over Cleveland in Game 3. James had 41 points in the loss for the Cavaliers, but went just 11-of-28 from the field. Orlando was favored by 1.5 points Sunday, and now they are an underdog for Tuesday. Baseball Betting – Coming off a rare non-win, Royals starter Zack Greinke will return to the mound at home on Tuesday night as his team hosts the Tigers. Greinke took a no-decision against the Indians last time out despite surrendering just two earned runs over six innings of work. The righthander is now 7-1 with an 0.82 ERA on the season, and he picked up a complete-game win over the Tigers back in April. Detroit counters Greinke with Edwin Jackson, who is 4-2 with a 2.55 ERA in 2009. The Royals are -150 favorites over the Tigers, but check out the latest baseball lines for live updates.

Also on tap in the American League on Tuesday: Toronto at Baltimore, Tampa Bay at Cleveland, the Yankees at Texas, Boston at Minnesota, Seattle at Oakland, and the White Sox at the Angels. Projected Los Angeles starter Joe Saunders is 6-2 with a 3.17 ERA, and he tossed seven scoreless innings vs. the Mariners last time out. Chicago’s Bartolo Colon (2-4, 4.23 ERA) is his opponent.

Making up the National League’s full slate for Tuesday: Florida at Philadelphia, Washington at the Mets, Houston at Cincinnati, Pittsburgh at the Cubs, St. Louis at Milwaukee, the Dodgers at Colorado, San Diego at Arizona, and Atlanta at San Francisco. The Giants will turn to ace Tim Lincecum for Tuesday night’s contest; the righthander is 3-1 with a 3.45 ERA this season, but he’s on a streak of three straight no-decisions. Atlanta will go with Kris Medlen (0-1, 15.00 ERA).

NHL Playoffs – The Penguins can sweep their way into the Stanley Cup final on Tuesday night when they take on the Hurricanes in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference final in Carolina. Pittsburgh rolled over the Canes 6-2 on the road in Game 3 on Saturday night, with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin combining for three goals and two assists. The oddsmakers like the Penguins’ chances of finishing off this series on Tuesday, as they’ve been pegged as -130 road faves (with total at 5.5).

I laid an egg last night with my premium picks, going 0-3 and our BEST BET was never really close. Didn’t see the Hack-A-Shaq coming on Dwight Howard to slow the pace and increase the scoring, plus Chris Paul was just lights out. On a positive note, we did cash both free picks in college hoops. Time to bounce back tonight with our premiums.

Tonight I’m passing on the two NBA games and focusing on a pair of games that are showing value in college basketball. We have our 20* No Doubt Rout going in Pac-10 action and a 15* in a lesser known Sun Belt contest. Chicago Blackhawks -115 over Florida Panthers at Sportsbook.com

Some of you hate hockey, but this was my favorite play that didn’t qualify as a premium: I know that Patrick Sharp is out for Chicago, and he’s the top goal scorer on this team, but it’s hard not to notice how well this team is putting the puck in the net without him on the ice. The Blackhawks have now won two straight, coming back from a two-goal deficit on Tuesday to beat the Lightning, 5-3. Florida has been playing well recently as well, but I’ll take the small favorite here when to me they are clearly the better team.

I also liked Duke last night, but the line has shot up a few too many points for me to recommend a play.

Jack’s Free Sports Picks: 2/15

Another dominant day yesterday going 3-0 with our Best Bet winning on BYU in a rout. The 15* plays on Hofstra and Houston won in closer fashions, but we’ll take them. Tough split on free picks with Minnesota blowing the late lead, but Kentucky never really in doubt.

For Sunday I’m playing the Duke/Boston College game with a 15* selection. No Best Bets today, nothing fits as a strong enough play and we don’t force anything. That’s part of the reason we are 15-2 with these strong plays. Don’t shy away from the 15* though, we are 19-7 with our last 26 in hoops action.

Free Picks for Sunday

Colorado +300 over Detroit at Bookmaker

I know some of you don’t know anything about hockey, so if you don’t want to comment on this game, just give me your opinions on some other hoops action today and I’ll still send you the premium pick. This is a pretty hefty underdog that I think shows value, but remember if Colorado has better than a 1 in 4 shot at winning this game, it would be worth a play. The Avalanche have beaten the Red Wings twice this year already, including a 3-2 victory at Detroit back in December. I know Colorado is in last place out West, but they have played better than their record shows, like Friday when they outshot the Candiens 48-23 yet lost. I think this line should be around +225, so there is quite a bit of value today if you want to take the Avalanche.

Free Picks for Tuesday

St. Louis +165 over Columbus at Sports Interaction

This is kind of a big underdog play we are taking tonight, but I think it shows some value. Columbus is coming off a terrible loss on Saturday to the Dallas Stars, in which their rookie goalie gave up three goals in just eight shots. Now that the 20-year-old is battling mononucleosis it will be intersting to see how the Blue Jacket defense reacts. Chris Mason on the other hand is riding high here recently, having not allowed a goal in his last 95 minutes. With all that going for us I think it’s worth a shot to take the heavy underdog tonight!

Florida -7.5 over South Carolina at Sports Interaction

This might seem like a lot of points to be laying with the Gators tonight, but I think they will win in blowout fashion. The Gators lost to the Gamecocks back on January 21st even though they shot 54% from the floor and held the Gamecocks to 39% shooting. I feel like Florida would take those numbers every time out, but on their home floor they aren’t going to lose the turnover battle so drastically. This game is sandwhiched in between the trip to Tennessee the Gators lost badley, and a trip to Kentucky in one week, but I doubt they will be looking ahead with that last loss to SC in their recent memory. South Carolina is not to be underestimated with their 16-4 record, but at 3-3 on the road I think they get beat up pretty badly by a Gator team that is 13-0 at home and winning by more than 18 points per game in Gainesville.
