Central Michigan 2009 Football Predictions

Written July 15, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 Central Michigan Football PredictionsDan LeFevour should be one of the top quarterbacks in the nation, and the receivers he has to work with are explosive. The Central Michigan Chippewas are solid defensively with 10 returning starters and they know how to come up with stops at key moments. This team has done very well in two years under coach Butch Jones, and the Chippewas clearly enter the season as the favorite to win the MAC. Offense: The Chippewas enter the 2009 season with an explosive offense once again after winning eight games with this deadly offense in Butch Jones’ first two seasons. Central Michigan has scored 30 or more points 16 times over the past two years. Quarterback Dan LeFevour has the keys to this offense after an excellent junior year in which he completed 251 of 376 passes for 2,784 yards with 21 touchdowns to just six interceptions. He also led the Chips with 592 rushing yards and six scores on the ground. Pro scouts have their eyes on this kid, and he could be the next-best senior QB after Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow.

Bryan Anderson and Antonio Brown are LeFevour’s top two receivers entering the fall. Anderson caught 63 balls for 865 yards and six touchdowns last year, while Brown was even better with 93 catches for 998 yards and seven touchdowns. Kito Poblah will be the third receiver after catching 43 passes a year ago. Bryan Schroeder may be the key at running back, as the Chippewas certainly need a more balanced attack. He rushed for 208 yards on 3.5 yards/carry last season, and Jones expects more from him. The line is anchored by junior center Collin Miller, a powerful blocker who brings an aggressive attitude to the table. LeFevour’s blindside may have some issues with freshman left tackle Jake Olson penciled in as a starter. Junior guard Jeff Maddux should give Olson some help as a returning starter from a successful 2008 campaign. Maddux is the proud owner of a 313-pound frame, one of the biggest interior blockers in the MAC.

Defense: The Chips’ biggest advantage over other MAC teams is that they return 10 defensive starters, so this unit should certainly improve on the 30.2 points/game they gave up last year. Linebacker Nick Bellore returns to the weakside position where he was dominant last season. He had 148 tackles, 5.5 coming for a loss, with two forced fumbles. Bellore moves quickly from sideline to sideline and he doesn’t miss many tackles. Defensive end Frank Zombo might be the most dangerous player on this side of the ball.

Zombo had a team-high 15.5 tackles for loss a year ago and he showed tremendous closing speed on opposing quarterbacks. That quickness allowed Zombo to record 9 sacks by season’s end. Middle linebacker Matt Berning is another reliable tackler, posting 70 stops and two fumble recoveries. Cornerback Josh Gordy is expected to have a big senior year after registering 47 tackles, six pass breakups and one interception in 2008.
