Chargers Jaguars Spread

I’m sure the producers of Monday Night Football did not expect the San Diego Chargers and Jacksonville Jaguars to be this bad through the first 11 games of the season. However, both teams have struggled to this point, and neither is likely to make the playoffs. The Chargers and Jaguars will square off Monday in Jacksonville in what has become a pretty meaningless game. The home team has won each of the last four meetings in this series, including a 38-13 victory by San Diego last season. Philip Rivers threw for 334 yards and three touchdowns to lead the way for the Chargers.
According to the latest odds, San Diego is a 3-point favorite over Jacksonville with a total set of 38.5 points.
San Diego
The wheels have fallen off, and the Chargers cannot seem to put them back on. San Diego (4-7, 1-4 away) has been very competitive during their six-game losing streak, but quarterback Philip Rivers hasn’t been able to close the deal in the fourth quarter of games. He has 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions during the skid. The Chargers managed to squander a 10-0 lead over Denver last Sunday, eventually losing 16-13 in overtime.
Their three-point loss to the Broncos represented the fifth time that San Diego has lost by seven or fewer points, which is the most by any AFC team. Rivers went just 19 of 36 passing for 188 yards with one touchdown, but he finally did not throw an interception. Ryan Matthews rushed for a career-high 137 yards against the Broncos, but it wasn’t enough. The loss puts the Chargers three games behind the Oakland Raiders in the AFC West division. They are going to need to win out while also getting some help to get back to the playoffs.
San Diego has had no problem moving the ball this season as they rank 7th in the NFL in total offense (386.0 yards/game). Their defense hasn’t been terrible, either. The Chargers rank 13th in the league in total defense (337.2 yards/game). However, they have had problems stopping the run. They rank 25th in run defense (131.9 yards/game), and they can certainly expect to see a heavy dose of Maurice Jones-Drew Monday night. Rivers is completing 61.1 percent of his passes for 3,211 yards with 16 touchdowns and a career-high 17 interceptions.
Jacksonville
The Jaguars have been going through a lot of turmoil over the last week. Jacksonville (3-8, 2-3 home) could have a hard time getting prepared to face the Chargers simply because of all the distractions. Owner Wayne Weaver has finally fired head coach Jack Del Rio, but he did give general managed Gene Smith a three-year extension. Also, Weaver has agreed to sell the team to Illinois businessman Shahid Khan, a sale that has been reported by Forbes magazine to be worth roughly $760 million.
Jacksonville fought tough against Houston at home last week, but came out on the short end by a final of 20-13. Their defense limited the Texans to just 47 yards and two first downs in the second half, but once again their offense let them down. The Jaguars managed only 255 total yards for the game. Blaine Gabbert went 13 of 29 passing for 136 yards with an interception before being benched in favor of Luke McCown, who was 7 of 11 for 62 yards. Jones-Drew rushed for 99 yards on 18 carries in the loss.
The Jaguars come in ranked 31st in the NFL in total offense (250.0 yards/game), including dead-last in passing offense (131.3 yards/game). This Jacksonville stop unit deserves a lot of credit for how well they have performed all season. They rank 4th in the league in total defense (292.5 yards/game), including 4th against the pass (183.4 yards/game). Jones-Drew has been a bright spot for this offense, rushing for 1,040 yards on the season to top the 1,000-yard mark for a third straight year. His 3,755 rushing yards over this span are the second-most in the NFL. Gabbert has thrown just two touchdown passes in his last five games, and he must start showing some progress soon.
