2009 Chick-fil-A Bowl Odds: Virginia Tech vs. Tennessee

Written December 28, 2009 by Kyle Hunter

The Chick-fil-A Bowl may well be the premiere pre-New Year’s bowl games because of its great yearly match ups. This year is no different as we have a match up between two strong football programs in Tennessee and Virginia Tech. The game is already sold out as both teams faithful will be out in full force at the Georgia Dome. Tennessee comes in at 7-5 in their first year under Lane Kiffin, while Virginia Tech enters this game at 9-3 on the season. The Virginia Tech Hokies were ranked in the top 10 for a while this season, but they lost two straight to Georgia Tech and North Carolina, before winning their last four games of the year. Tyrod Taylor is one of the more exciting players to watch in college football, and he definitely improved as the year went on. This year he threw for 2,102 yards and 13 touchdowns, while throwing just 4 interceptions. Taylor is also a real threat to run with the ball or keep plays alive with his feet. Freshman tailback Ryan Williams was a pleasant surprise this year for the Hokies. Williams averaged 5.7 yards per carry and had 18 touchdowns on the year. As the year went along Virginia Tech’s offense progressed nicely. In the same manner the Virginia Tech defense started the year a little slowly, but they came on in a big way at the end of the season. The defense finished the year allowing 300 yards per game and 15.8 points per game, good for 11th in the nation.

Tennessee had an up and down season, but they did show improvement throughout the year. They nearly upset #1 Alabama and dominated Georgia and South Carolina. The Vols won 4 of their last 5, mainly because their offense started to pick up the slack. Jonathan Crompton has been much maligned, but his numbers ended up pretty impressive this year. In their last 5 games Crompton threw 12 touchdowns and just 2 interceptions. Overall he threw 26 touchdowns and 12 interceptions and had a completion percentage of 58%. Montario Hardesty and freshman sensation Bryce Brown provide a strong backfield for Tennessee. Both runners average more than 4.5 yards per carry. The defense is strong and it is led by Ronnie Lott award winner Eric Berry. The whole season the Vols defense was consistently good, allowing just 309 yards per game while going against some very tough competition.

The college football odds for the bowl season show Virginia Tech a 4.5 point favorite in this one. The posted total on this game has been set at 49.5 points. If you are making college bowl picks, remember that the under is 5-0 in Tennesee’s last 5 bowl games and Virginia Tech is 8-3 ATS against teams with a winning record.

Both of these defenses have been good all year long, but both offenses have improved as the season goes along. Tennessee must contain Tyrod Taylor and Ryan Williams on the ground and Virginia Tech needs to force some turnovers and take advantage of them by scoring touchdowns and not field goals. This should be a very good gameĀ on New Year’s Eve for football fans! The football predictions on this game are split, and the college football experts all seem to think this will be a good one!
