Chiefs at Bengals NFL Spreads
Written December 22, 2009 by Kyle Hunter
The Kansas City Chiefs have had a season to forget and the Cincinnati Bengals have had a very long last two weeks. With the tragic loss of Chris Henry followed by an exhausting last second defeat at San Diego the Bengals have had a very long week. Cincinnati now sits at 9-5 and needs one more win to assure themselves of making the playoffs this season. No doubt their best chance is to go ahead and clinch this weekend against the 3-11 Chiefs, but you know the Chiefs will want to play the spoiler role. It wasn’t all negative on the field last weekend against the Chargers for Cincinnati. The Bengals showed a lot of heart and the passing game got going again for the first time in quite a while. Carson Palmer has had a solid year, but his numbers are less than spectacular and last weekend was his first 300 yard passing game of the season. Chad Ocho Cinco went over 1,000 receiving yards last week and tight end J.P. Foschi stepped up and had a career high 7 receptions. In Cedric Benson the Bengals have a very good bruising running back who is averaging 4.1 yards per carry and wears teams down. They also have Larry Johnson, Bernard Scott, and Brian Leonard, who are all very capable backs. Depth at running back is now a real strength in Cincinnati. The Bengals defense has dropped a little statistically the last two weeks, but that is what happens when you play the Vikings and the Chargers in back to back games. The defense is still the reason they are where they are today and they are allowing just 17.4 points per game.
The Kansas City Chiefs brought in Matt Cassel in the off season to try and kick start their offense, but things haven’t went just as planned. Cassel’s completion percentage is below 55% and he has thrown 15 touchdowns and 13 interceptions on the year. The bright spot of late has been the impressive running of Jamaal Charles. Charles has run for 143 and 154 yards in their last two games and is now averaging 5.4 yards per carry on the season. Dwayne Bowe is still a great deep threat, but he has just 37 receptions on the season. The Kansas City defense hasn’t held up its end either, as it has just gotten worse as the season has gone along. For the year they are allowing 27.4 points per game, but in the last 3 games they are giving up 34 points per game.
The NFL odds for this weekend show the Bengals favored by two touchdowns in this one. The posted total is set at 40 points. If your making NFL predictions on this game you’ll want to remember these two trends: the Bengals are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 against teams with losing records, and the Chiefs are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
The Bengals need this game, because they certainly don’t want to go into New York the last week of the season needing a win. Expect the Bengals to pound the ball on the ground after seeing how much success Jerome Harrison and the Browns had last weekend. If the Bengals show up ready to play and take care of the ball they should clinch in this one.
