Chiefs Patriots Line

The New England Patriots are set to host the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football. New England took back control of the AFC East with an impressive 37-16 win at New York on Sunday Night Football. The Chiefs hopes of winning the AFC West took a hit with a 10-17 loss at home to Denver, as they have lost two straight since winning four in a row to tie for the division lead.

Taking a look at the week 11 spreads, oddsmakers currently have New England favored by 15-points over Kansas City with the total set at 46.5 points.

Kansas City Chiefs:

While Kansas City has surprised a lot of people by how well they have played despite numerous injuries to key players, it would take a miracle for this team to win at New England on Monday Night Football. The Chiefs will be without starting quarterback Matt Cassel, who suffered a hand injury late in the loss to the Broncos. On top of that, starting corners Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr and starting defensive end Glenn Dorsey are all listed as questionable.

The Chiefs offense has managed just 13 points combined in their last two games against Miami and Denver, and now  must find a way to move the ball with Tyler Palko at quarterback.  Palko came in and went 5 of 6 for 47 yards, but it’s hard to expect those kind of numbers on this kind of stage against the Patriots.

The Chiefs rushed for 134 yards on just 24 attempts, averaging 5.6 yards per carry. Why they didn’t run more is a hard to figure out. They were playing from behind, but never trailed by more than 10 points.

I don’t think there is any question that the Chiefs will come in looking to run the ball against New England, but I wouldn’t be surprised if New England didn’t stack the box early and force Palko to throw the ball.

New England Patriots:

Just when it looked like the Patriots were headed in the wrong direction, they come out and play one of their best games of the season. It took the Patriots offense a little bit to get going, but once they got started they didn’t stop. While a lot of teams could have a let down against a team like Kansas City who just lost their starting quarterback, that’s not something you expect from a Bill Belichick coached team.

Tom Brady carved up the Jets defense for 329 yards and three touchdowns on 26 of 39 passing. His favorite target was tight end Rob Gronkowski, who  finished with eight catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Deion Branch hauled in five for 58 yards and a score, and Wes Welker had six catches for 46 yards.

New England managed just 60 rushing yards on 28 attempts against the Jets, but they only seemed to run the ball to keep the Jets honest. Danny Woodhead was the top rusher with just 38 yards on seven attempts.

Brady and the Patriots offense should be able to do as they please against the Chiefs this week, especially if Kansas City is without Flowers and Carr. Even if both play, the Chiefs defense is in a very difficult spot. With an offense that figures to have a hard time moving the football, the Chiefs defense figures to spend most of this game on the field, which is the one thing you don’t want to have happen when you are facing the Patriots.

Betting Trends:

Kansas City is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games after scoring less than 15 points in their previous game.

New England is 5-1 ATS vs. a team with a losing record.
