2009 Kansas City Chiefs Football Predictions

Written August 23, 2009 by Nick Scarpa

chiefs-predictions-2009The 2009 Kansas City Chiefs roster and front-office has been retooled from top-to-bottom with a new GM, Head Coach and QB. In at Head Coach is Todd Haley who was last year’s Offensive Coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals. The QB and new GM are a couple of former New England Patriots in Matt Cassell and Scott Pioli. Haley, Pioli and Cassell are not used to losing so a quick turnaround is expected although probably not very realistic in 09’. K.C will continue to struggle in 08’ but still should top the lowly Oakland Raiders for a 3rd place AFC West finish.

The offense will have a new philosophy with Cassell behind center. The Chiefs have a quality big-back in RB Larry Johnson but Cassell was brought in to test defenses with his strong arm. The jury will be out on Cassell to prove that last year’s success in his 1st year as a starter was not just a product of the strong supporting cast around him in New England. Cassell will have to due without K.C’s most productive wideout to ever live in TE Tony Gonzalez. Without Gonzalez, the Chiefs will have to depend more on a group of possession receivers in Dwayne Bowe, Mark Bradley and Bobby Engram. Bowe has quietly become one of the most productive WR’s in the NFL and should have a big year with Cassell firing the bullets. The O-Line has a formidable left side and a non-existent right side that needs to tighten up.

K.C has a new Defensive Coordinator in Clancy Pendergast who will change the defense from a 4-3 to a 3-4. Change was needed for a Chiefs defense that performed poorly in 2008 with only 10.0 sacks. The transition could be a painful one for a defense that lacks a true pass-rushing threat. Drafted 3rd overall was versatile DELB Tyson Jackson was selected to help put pressure on QB‘s, but he is more of an all-around player rather than a pass-rush specialist. Last season’s #1 overall pick Glenn Dorsey was “just a guy” in 08’ and may never live up to his potential. The linebacking crew got a boost with the signing of two veteran playmakers in Zach Thomas and Mike Vrabel. Thomas and Vrabel will team with athletic ILB Derrick Johnson in what looks to be a solid group if they can stay healthy. The secondary is young but has some upside with two physical cornerbacks in Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr. Special teams desperately needs to get better in the return game, but the Chiefs have a big-time punter in Dustin Colquitt.
