2010 Citi National Championship: Texas vs Alabama Odds

Written December 22, 2009 by Rock Henderson

The BCS National Championship will be decided in Pasadena, CA this year when the top ranked Alabama Crimson Tide clash with the 2nd ranked Texas Longhorns.  Alabama comes into the match up with all the momentum after dismantling defending national champion Florida in the SEC title game.  Texas struggled against a game Nebraska team in the Big 12 championship and needed a last second field goal to propel themselves into a position to earn their second national title in recent years.  According to our college football lines, the Longhorns are a 4.5 point underdog.

Mack Brown became the highest paid coach in his sport when Texas locked up a return trip to the national title game.  Brown will be paid 5 million annually for the next seven years.  QB Colt McCoy has much to do with the success that Brown has had as a head coach.  He finished a disappointing third place in this year’s Heisman vote, but that doesn’t take away from the outstanding season McCoy has had.  The senior signal caller threw for 3512 yards and 27 touchdowns with 12 interceptions.  Nebraska might have provided the blue print to slow him down though as he did not throw a touchdown in the game and was intercepted three times.  Make no mistake about it, Texas is a pass first team but do have some options in the running game.  Freshman Tre’ Newton has been the most productive in the backfield as he has rushed for 513 yards and six touchdowns.  McCoy is second on the team in rushing and is always a threat to pull it down and gain nice yardage.  Alabama’s secondary will have to find a way to slow down the most explosive offense player for the Horns in WR Jordan Shipley.  His numbers are NFL like with 106 grabs on the year and 11 touchdowns.  Shipley will play an important role in the return game also.  Something will have to give in the offensive and defensive averages.  Alabama’s defense allows only 11 ppg, while Texas’s offense is putting up over 40 per game. Take advantage of the $100 bonus Sportsinteraction.com is offering for opening a new account and start betting on college football now.

The Crimson Tide of Alabama have returned to national prominence under the direction of Nick Saban.  It didn’t take long to do either.  Bama’ has had some close calls this season, but in the end they persevered.  RB Mark Ingram is the marquee player for the Tide and his three touchdown performance against Florida earned him the Heisman Trophy nod.  The sophomore back rushed for over 1500 yards this season and found the end zone 15 times.  Many critics have doubted that QB Greg McElroy would play well enough to lead the Tide this far.  He arguably outplayed Tim Tebow in the SEC title game and is throwing the ball with much more confidence.  His number one target in the passing game is physical WR Julio Jones.  While his numbers are not as impressive as Shipley’s, he is just as important in Alabama’s offense and requires the attention of everyone on the field.  The Tide will be seeking their 13th national championship behind a defense that ranks 2nd nationally in yards allowed.  DT Terrance Cody takes up a lot of space in the trenches which allows talented LB Rolando McClain to rome around freely.  CB Javier Arenas is the most talented player in the secondary and can effect the game with his return skills.

The public has favored the Longhorns in early betting trends and have dropped the spread by a full point at most books.  Alabama is being labeled as a shoe in to win the title after their dominant performance vs. Florida and Texas struggling against an average Nebraska team.  Every year it seems that the team who plays the underdog role in these situations comes out with a chip on their shoulder.  The Crimson Tide will confuse Colt McCoy into making costly mistakes while they rely on their powerful running game.  Take Alabama to the bank.

Recommended Play: Alabama -4.5

Alabama wins the game 37-21 blowing Texas out of the dam stadium from start to finish. I loved every minute of it and laughed when McCoy got hurt on that dirty helmet hit but thats SEC football its just the best there ever was and is in our lifetime in the college football world of the bcs system and your teams is a joke for thinking you can ever beat us no team can go undefeated only us you losers have nothing on us we beat the big12 who is a joke to us like the bigten and pacten pattsies and no nonbcs team can ever beat us at full strength so stop with that bs and go suck off talking noise about Saban he is god of the universe to you and you must before him

Being a 54 year old lady from Boise, ID, I for one, with good mind and heart truly believe my Broncos won the National Title but not the BCS Title because they are a nonbcs team and we take great pride in being a nonbcs team. The WAC does not suck as you say and further did you know that Utah and Boise St. are 4-0 in BCS bowls? Can you dig on that and be more polite on here you sound like a loudmouth alcoholic. Pray for McCoy to recover soon may god bless all of you.

The BCS game…overhyped and everyone’s an armchair QB…just like most past Super Bowls…yeah, yeah…Bama won…and the BCS system is still flawed…too bad Boise State is overlooked and can’t figure into the final mix somehow…we’ll all deliberate it, year after year, ad nauseam, until a true playoff system is established. Joe Pa pushed for this 40 years plus ago, the year Texas beat Arkansas and Notre Dame, and Penn State beat Kansas in the Orange Bowl, when both of them instead should have “duked” it out, but who remembers? Why won’t someone take note, aside from Obama, and move to revamp the overload of bowls into a playoff format that Division II and III teams already utilize…go back to 10-game season schedule formats, include the bowls in a 16-team playoff format, and finish with a true championship on New Year’s Day, thus preventing the 30-plus day “rust” that plagues many teams going into the BCS season…do so NOW…listen to Joe Pa, and to college football fans everywhere, and redo the system! Don’t need to even read any posts to know UT fans are whining….just remember this—-if Bradford doesn’t get hurt in the 1st half against OKL you guys are playing in the holiday bowl or something and Colt MCcoy doesn’t play defense so allowing (2) 100 yd rushers and all the mistakes and not taking advantage of 2 prime scoring opps in the first Q doomed the horns……with all that said Alabama was not really impressive, another case for a playoff for I saw a few teams play this last week that could easily hang with both teams that played last night……….Im not thinking Colt is on the same level as Vince Young and hes the only pro QB i can think of that runs some gimmick spread offense and most of the time the QB is going to get hurt running that junk and from watching Colt throw he makes Alex Smith look like Jonny U so he had a nice college career but thats as far as I see him going but he’ll probably get a chance to prove me wrong. Breaking news Pete Carroll is about to take the job in Seattle and Jim Harbaugh is headed to USC and then Leach is headed to Stanford.

caveraptor….. You make me sick to my stomach you filthy pigface, sexist pig. It’s not about not trusting yourself. That’s alabama’s staple on D is to knock people out. They have knocked a player out 11 of 14 games. Mean Joe Greene defense baby, I love it. Tackling is a part of the game and when you are tackling you are not out there on the field trying making friends, you are trying to knock the stuffing out of the turkey. We are terminators on defense that’s what we do. 300 pound defensive tackles that move like Linebackers, you saw the TD run back at half-time. By the way that same lineman is the one who dislodged Colt’s shoulder. Hits are a part of the game and you teach players to hit bone-crushing hard and to strip balls. Colt will need to lift more weights in the off season before coming to the NFL. We are not the only ones that will have 300+ lb linemen coming at him. To Texas fans thank Nick Saben for taking his foot off the gas in the second half once we went up 24-6. They went conservative and stop running the great run plays that Ingram and richardson were using to gash your defensive line. We did not need to throw with the two headed running back attack. 200+ yards from both backs combined. I did mention we did not run any aggressive running or passing plays until we realized that Texas was actually trying to win. We turned back up the intensity on defense which is our strength all season and it was curtains again. So I am tired of hearing if Colt had of not have gotten hurt. Well he did. Injuries are a part of the game. Ingram was out nearly the whole second half with cramps and richardson still almost got a hundred yards. Saban’s a class act and did not want to run up the score but maybe he should have not called off the dogs and the game probably would have never been close. To Colt McKoy a piece of advice, please get into a weight training regiment before you go to the NFL because you may think the SEC hits hard that’s nothing compared to the NFL. Now go stick a fork in your theory you sore loser.

    RKF

Jerk… what is wrong with you? you campaign so hard year after year for texas and usc and disrespect the SEC with everything you got. I hope this puts things in prospective for you. All I heard last night after Alabama won was excuses why Texas lost instead of respecting Alabama and giving them what they earned. ESPN commentators i ask stop campaigning for texas and USC, their not the best year after year after year, I heard last night a couple of them saying texas and USC were top 5 teams next year….i say BS, i got 1 last thing to say and really think about it ESPN and TEXAS because BAMA WILL BE BACK NEXT YEAR FOR YOU, hey longhorns, hey longhorns, hey longhorns, WE JUST BEAT THE HELL OUTTA YOU, rammer jammer yellowhammer give em hell alabama GO ROT IN HELL ALL YOU GUTLESS FATHERLESS, LOSERS WHO ARE NOT SEC FANS. HAVE FUN WATCHING US WIN TITLES YOU POOR BASTERDS WILL NEVER WIN ONE FREAKING TITE IN A MILLION DAMN YEARS YOU ARE A FAG IN MY BOOK EVEN IF YOUR A BOUNCER AT A QUEER BAR LIKE YOU SAID LAST YEAR WHEN FLORIDA BEAT OKLAHOMA AND BOISE ST BEAT PENN ST IN 2006 45-TO NOTHING YOU DAMN LIAR.

  11. Bamawins13titles on January 8th, 2010 3:58 PM

On another note….Things just can’t get much better. We expand our stadium to over 100k to open the season, we pick up Penn state and Florida again. WoW!We’ve had back to back no. 1 ranked recruiting classes which will be sophomores and juniors next season. Our current recruiting class is ranked no. 3 in the country. All of our skill players are back on offense. Our qb, both Ingram and Trent Richardson, Julio, all the wideouts, several great tight ends in the wings, we lose 2 o-lineman but have 2 former 5 star tackle recruits waiting in the wings to take over and several former 4 star recruits to battle them for those 2 o line spots. On defense we lose 3 starting d lineman including cody and we lose Ro McClain, 2 corners, and 1 safety. Safety will be improved with the speed of Robby Green who played a lot last night and throughout the season plus the addition of several top rated safety prospects. We got Donta Hightower back to take over Ro’s spot. We landed the no. 1 rated cornerback prospect in the country 2 years in a row so we are fine there and have other top rated corners besides the top 2. We have 2 former 5 star lb recruits on top of several 4 star lb recruits all fighting to take over. RFK you suck. We have Chapman at noseguard who played probably more than Cody taking over at nose tackle. Plus several huge recruits behind him. We have Marcel dareus returning at one D end spot which will be an upgrade and we get back Damion square at the other D end spot from injury. Got several former 4 star d ends waiting in the wings to back up those 2 terrors.
Good God I can’t wait till next season.

Anyways… Texas played great all night and deserved to win if McCoy played all the game.

sallybunn… I know Boise st. never beat Penn st. because my friends dad loves Joe Pa and he would not be talking about Boise st. as bad as he does when they play if they beat Penn st. I looked it up and could not find that victory.
