Clemson at Auburn Line

This Saturday the Clemson Tigers will head to Jordan-Hare Stadium to take on the No.15 ranked Auburn Tigers, as both teams look to improve to 3-0 on the season. Clemson comes into the game off a 58-21 win against Presbyterian, while Auburn was able to hold on for a 17-14 win at Mississippi State last week. If you are interested in the odds for this game, the oddsmakers currently have Auburn listed as 7-point favorites over Clemson at home.

Auburn went into halftime against Mississippi State with a 17-7 lead, as the offense really looked good in the first two quarters of play. With the offense unable to get anything going in the second half, the Tigers defense really stepped and put the clamps on the Bulldogs offense.

Auburn got another great performance out of junior quarterback Cameron Newton, who not only threw for 136 yards and two touchdowns, but also led the Tigers with 70 rushing yards. Sophomore Ontario McCalebb led the running backs with 68 yards on 12 carries. Emory Blake and Darvin Adams each caught a touchdown pass in the win, but only combined for five catches for 77 yards.

Clemson comes into the matchup this weekend averaging 46.5 points a game, and it will be interesting to see if they can get anywhere near that kind of production against a good SEC defense. The Tigers have done most of their damage on the ground, as they are averaging 229 rushing yards a game. In last week’s win over Presbyterian the Tigers got 86 yards and a touchdown from Roderick McDowell, and another 79 yards from senior Daniel Barnes.

Quarterback Kyle Parker had to played in just four possessions last week, as their was no reason to keep him in the game with the win in the bag. Parker still managed to complete six of nine passes for 114 yards, including touchdown strikes to Jaron Brown and Dwayne Allen.

This will be the first road game of the season for the Tigers, and as good as the offense has looked this season, it will be the defense that plays the bigger role in this game, as they have not been tested in the first two games of the season.

Looking at the Odds: I believe you have to take the Auburn Tigers to cover the 7-point spread in this game, as I think their defense is going to be able to really slow down the Tigers offense. Auburn is 13-0 all-time against Clemson, with the last win coming in the Chik-fil-A Bowl in 2007. While Clemson has looked good in their first two games, I don’t think they are going to be ready to play in a tough environment on the road. I also think Clemson is going to have a very tough time controlling Newton on defense, and that has me thinking the final score will be Auburn 27, Clemson 17.
