Clemson at Georgia Tech Odds, Betting Line & Spread

A key early season ACC match up will go off in the ATL Thursday night as the Clemson Tigers take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Both teams come off impressive week 1 wins against inferior opponents and will really have to ratchet up the intensity this week. The line currently sits at Georgia Tech favored by 4.5 points. The Rambling Wreck scored a TD with 5 minutes to go last year to take home a 21 to 17 victory in Death Valley. These two teams are both favorites to win their division in the ACC so this will tell a lot as to who is a contendor or pretendor in conference. Thursday’s college football lines show Georgia Tech as 5 point favorites against Clemson, with the over/under set at 43.5 points.
Clemson opened the season with a 37 to 14 win over Middle Tennessee State. Heisman canidate CJ Spiller opened things with a bang as he scampered 96 yards to house the kickoff for a TD. Spiller did leave the game early in the third quarter with an injury that was not considered to be severe at the time. This is an injury that could have huge implications on the game if he is ruled out. Definitely keep an eye on this throughout the week. True freshman QB Kyle Parker was efficient against the Blue Raiders as he threw for 159 yards and two touchdowns. The defensive returns 8 starters and was impressive in the opener holding MTSU to negative rushing yards in the first half. They will see the most unique rushing attack in college football featuring Paul Johnson’s spread option attack. Tech ran for 207 yards last year against this defense, but that was almost 70 yards less than what they averaged throughout the 2008 season. Jonathan Dwyer led the way last Saturday against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks as he ran for 95 yards and two touchdowns on just 7 carries. The Jackets totaled 335 yards on the ground total and rested most their starters in the second half. The offense did not seem to be totally in synch though as they put the ball on the ground five times in the opener and three were recovered by the Gamecocks. QB Josh Nesbitt ran for one score and threw for another in the fourth quarter as he had a solid outing. The defense has not been tested by the speed they will face on Thursday and they are working in three new faces on the defensive line.
The match up between these two teams has gone down to the wire in many of the recent meetings. In 10 of the last 13 games, the final score has been decided by 5 points or less. Clemson scored twice on special teams last week and will need to do the same against Tech to take the pressure off the freshman QB going on the road for the first time. We like Clemson’s speedy defense to keep this game close and be decided by a FG late either way. Make sure that Spiller is a go for this game before you take the points. Without him, we will switch the play to laying the points on the Jackets.
