2011 Cleveland Browns Schedule

For a second straight season the Cleveland Browns finished with a 5-11 record. While the end results were the same, there is a lot more optimism surrounding this organization heading into the 2011-12 NFL season. The Browns decided to part ways with head coach Eric Mangini at the end of the season, opening the door for new head coach Pat Shurmur. The hope is that their core of young players will continue to mature and this team will once again be competitive in the NFC North. Outside of their 10-6 campaign in 2008, the Browns haven’t finished with more than six wins since going 9-7 in 2002.
A lot of how a team finishes has to do with who they play and when they play them. Let’s take a look at the Browns 2011-12 schedule to get a better idea of just where this team might be headed this season. Outside of the Browns six division games against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, and Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland will take on the AFC South, NFC West, Oakland Raiders, and Miami Dolphins.
In order for the Browns to turn the corner they have to start playing better against their division rivals. Cleveland went just 1-5 against the AFC North in 2010, with their only win coming at home against the Cincinnati Bengals. Turning the corner against the Steelers and Ravens this season doesn’t appear likely. In the four games against these two teams last year they were outscored by a combined 57-points,and all four were decided by at least seven points.
In Cleveland’s four games against the AFC South they have to go on the road to take on the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans, while getting both the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans at home. It doesn’t appear likely that the Browns will win either road game against the Colts or Texans, but I could easily see them favored in both home games against the Jaguars and Titans. If they can split these four games, I am confident they will finish with a better record this season.
While the Browns still have a ways to go, they likely could compete for a division title in the NFC West. There four games against this division has them playing the St Louis Rams and Seattle Seahawks at home, and going on the road to take on the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals. Cleveland has the talent to win all four of these games, but a 2-2 split is more likely for a team in transition.
The Browns two conference games against the Raiders and Dolphins figure to bring a challenge, but again these are two games I wouldn’t be surprised to see them win. Cleveland won at Miami last year, and will get them at home this season. While they have to go on the road against the Raiders, Oakland went just 2-8 against teams outside of the AFC West last year. A win in both of these games and the Browns could end the year right around 8-8, which would be a huge improvement and a great sign for the future.
