Cleveland Cavaliers at Atlanta Hawks Game 4

Written May 11, 2009 by Jack Jones

hawks-cavsRight now it is scary just how good LeBron James is playing and that means that the Atlanta Hawks’ chances of winning this series are slim to none, and slim just left town.  Game 3 was actually pretty close with Atlanta just down one at the half, but it got ugly quickly as the Cavs pulled away for a 97-82 win.  James had 47 points, 12 rebounds, and eight assists to fall just two dimes short of the triple-double.  Can Cleveland complete the sweep?  The NBA spreads suggest they do as Cleveland is a 10.5 point favorite tonight.  Even with the double digit point spread on a road team, bettors are still flocking to the Cavs and laying the points with their NBA betting.

With the Lakers losing game 4 to the Rockets yesterday, and looking pretty pathetic doing so, most pundits now are making the Cavs the favorite to win the NBA Finals this year.  A win tonight against the Hawks would give Cleveland their second straight series sweep as they also easily took care of business against the Detroit Pistons in Round 1.  If LeBron keeps playing like he has been then you have to think Atlanta has little chance of keeping pace tonight.

The question for tonight isn’t whether the Hawks can steal a game, but rather if they can just keep it close.  The Cavs have won every game so far this post-season by double digits, which is an NBA record.   The Cavs are 5-0 ATS in their last five as a road favorite and 11-0 ATS in their last 11 overall.  Cleveland is 17-5 ATS in their last 22 conference semifinal games and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 meetings in Atlanta.  The Hawks though are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games as a home underdog and 1-4 ATS in their last five overall.  The Under is 5-1 in the last six games Cleveland has played as a playoff favorite and 16-5 Under in their last 21 conference semifinal games.

This is another game that I’m staying away from, but if I had to make a pick I would take the points. The Hawks are a better team than what they have showed so far and shouldn’t be getting quite this many points tonight.  I would have set the line at seven or eight, so there is probably some line value tonight on Atlanta, just not enough for me to hop on board.  If you want additional NBA picks on this game or others, see who our other experts are taking.
