College Basketball Power Rankings: Wake Forest on the Rise
Written January 15, 2009 by Jay Horne
1. Pittsburgh Panthers (16-0)
The Panthers are still perfect at 16-0 over some strong opponents. There big win over Georgetown proved how talented the team is and they will get another challenge this weekend when they travel to Louisville.
2. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (15-0)
The Demon Deacons victory over North Carolina proved their undefeated campaign is legit. With one of the best scoring teams in America, who would have thought the best team in the ACC would not be Duke or UNC?
3. Connecticut Huskies (14-1)
The Huskies have beaten more quality teams than anyone and their only loss was from a strong Georgetown team. The Huskies get Villanova and Notre Dame in the near future and it will be interesting to see if they can keep the momentum rolling. UConn plays at St. John’s tonight as a 12 point favorite.
4. Duke Blue Devils (15-1)
The Blue Devils keep winning and have not been truly contested since their lone loss to Michigan. Duke is got talent no question, but how they perform against the better competition that is about to take over their schedule will be the real test of strength.
5. North Carolina Tarheels (15-2)
Does the undefeated talk seem like a distant memory? The Tarheels appeared to be the best team in the country hands down for a large portion of the early season. However with recent losses to Boston College and Wake Forest, the Tarheels may not even be among the top 2 teams in the ACC.
6. Oklahoma Sooners (16-1)
Oklahoma is one of the most completed teams in America getting it done on all aspects of the court. The Sooners dominated Texas 78-63 and definitely appear to be the best team from the Big 12. With no major test in the near future, the Sooners should stay rolling.
7. Clemson Tigers (16-0)
The Tigers are still perfect on the season, but the schedule is about to get horrific. Clemson will get Wake Forest and North Carolina back to back. If the Tigers are still undefeated after those games, they will come out as the top team in the nation but that is not likely to happen.
8. Michigan State Spartans (13-2)
The Spartans may be getting some high praises from the voters, but they have yet to beat any really strong teams. The light schedule does not help them prove their national status either. However, the Spartans will likely keep winning and hanging around.
9. UCLA Bruins (13-2)
Say what you want, but the Bruins are winning game very convincingly. Arizona State and California may be the only two teams that can really challenge the Bruins in the Pac-10 this season resulting in a strong schedule by the time year runs out. UCLA hosts Arizona tonight. The Bruins are 11.5 point favorites.
10. Marquette Golden Eagles (15-2)
A bunch will disagree with Marquette being better than Georgetown, Texas, and Syracuse. However, the Golden Eagles are solid as any in the Big East and they blew out no. 23 West Virginia by 22 points. They should get another victory or two before a tough two game stretch with Notre Dame and Georgetown.
