College Basketball Power Rankings: UConn Still Tops
Written February 5, 2009 by Jay Horne
1. Connecticut Huskies (21-1)
Nearly a little more than a week or so ago we had a ton of one loss teams, but now Connecticut and Oklahoma are the only two one loss teams left in America. The Huskies have put together the impressive record through the best conference in America. Connecticut blew out No. 7 Louisville on Monday night picking up their 7th victory against the Top 25 this season.
2. North Carolina Tarheels (20-2)
North Carolina is back to dominating as they did to start off the season. In the last 6 straight wins, North Carolina has won by at least 17 in 5 of those games. Add to the fact Duke goes down to Clemson, and North Carolina is now in a 3-way tie for the lead in the ACC.
3. Oklahoma Sooners (22-1)
The Sooners overcame a scare from Texas A&M for the 2nd time this year on Wednesday night and simply keep winning while the rest of the nation continues to stumble. Blake Griffin is most probably the best player in America (22ppg 14rpg), but the Sooners lack the RPI that the top schools from the ACC and Big East pose.
4. Marquette Golden Eagles (20-2)
I believe I stated last week that this would be the Cinderella story this year and I am standing by that statement. The Eagles have amassed 12 straight wins and are the only team from the Big East that is undefeated in conference play. The next few games do not look too bad either as they will be reasonable favorites, but the end of the year will really be tough with Georgetown, Connecticut, Louisville, and Pittsburgh to close out the season.
5. Pittsburgh Panthers (20-2)
Pittsburgh has rebounded since their losses from Villanova and Louisville and few short weeks ago with wins over the Rutgers and Notre Dame. The Panthers are still among the best in the Big East, but their inconsistency over the last few games may be trouble for the future. Bet college basketball this season with BetUS.
6. Clemson Tigers (19-2)
The Tigers blew out the Duke Blue Devils in a way I do not think anybody over the last two decades has ever seen by a score of 74-47. The win marks huge strives that Clemson is making to be considered among the best teams in the ACC. If the Tigers can keep controlling the rest of the ACC like they have this season opposed to the losses to UNC and Wake they could be the team that has the best shot of winning the ACC regular season title.
7. Xavier Musketeers (19-2)
Xavier is a team that is benefiting from the rest of the top 10 teams that have been falling like flies in the recent week or so. The Musketeers barely held of UMass 82-80 on Saturday to pick up their 10 straight win. However, Xavier keeps rolling and the schedule looks very favorable throughout the rest of the year.
8. Duke Blue Devils (19-3)
Duke was among the top ranked team in America over a week ago, but the wheels have fallen off the bandwagon. The Blue Devils have lost two of the last three included an embarrassing loss to Clemson on Wednesday night. Hopefully the rest of the nation did not notice they can not beat a full court press.
9. Louisville Cardinals (17-4)
Despite the 4 losses, Louisville is still a scary team for any opponent to tangle with on the floor. The Cardinals ended a 9 game winning streak when the fell to top ranked Connecticut on Monday 68-51. However, Louisville has a light schedule over the next two weeks and a great chance to put another streak together.
10. Michigan State Spartans (17-4)
The Spartans lost a close one to Penn State on Sunday 72-68, but rebounded in a big way knocking off No. 19 Minnesota 76-47 on Wednesday night. The Spartans are back on top of the Big Ten Standings and barely hanging around the top ten.
