College Basketball Power Rankings: Huskies Hold Off The Rest Of The Pack

Written March 5, 2009 by Jay Horne

college-basketball-power-rankings-0305091. Connecticut Huskies (27-2)
The Huskies have just one game left on the schedule and it will be a big showdown with Pittsburgh. Connecticut is on top of the Big East and could wrap things up with a win over the Panthers even though Pittsburgh won the first meeting. Despite the outcome, the Huskies have secured a number 1 seed in March. Bet on UConn in the Big East Tournment with BetUS.

2. North Carolina Tarheels (26-3)
North Carolina knocked off Virginia Tech last night 86-78 in another Tarheels high scoring performance which they have done all season. The rivalry game with Duke is the only game left on the schedule to take place in Chapel Hill. North Carolina could also gain the top ranking in America heading into the conference tournament week if they could get if Connecticut falls.

3. Pittsburgh Panthers (27-3)
The Panthers had a very convincing win last night when they took down Marquette 90-75. National sophomore standout DeJuan Blair led the Panthers scoring 23 points and pulling down 9 rebounds. Despite the Panthers trailing Connecticut for most of the year in the conference, Pittsburgh could actually be the best suited team for the NCAA Tournament out of the Big East.

4. Memphis Tigers (27-3)
The Tigers made it to the National Championship game a season ago and they are looking very dominant heading into March again this season. Memphis has now racked up 21 straight wins and could very well steal one of the final number 1 seeds in the tournament.

5. Louisville Cardinals (24-5)
The Cardinals handled business last night against Seton Hall in a strong showing defeating the Pirates 95-78. Earl Clark banked in with 27 points that equaled a season high for the junior in the winning effort. If Pittsburgh can get the win over Connecticut, it would make a 3 way tie at 15-3 in the Big East expecting the Cardinals can take care of West Virginia in the season finale.

6. Missouri Tigers (25-5)
Missouri could not get the needed win against Kansas to contend for the Big 12 regular season title, but that did not stop them from bouncing back with an impressive victory over Oklahoma. DeMarre Carroll had a double-double night with 15 points and 10 rebounds in the winning effort. Even with Kansas lost last night, the Tigers still will finish 2nd in the Big 12.

7. Duke Blue Devils (25-5)
The Blue Devils have won 5 straight games after a hard fought win over Florida State on Tuesday night. Gerald Henderson and Kyle Singler both scored 20 plus points in the winning efforts and both players will have to be effective in March for the Blue Devils to have success.  Bet Duke to win the ACC tournament with BookMaker.

8. Oklahoma Sooners (26-4)
Things really are not looking good for the Sooners after their 73-64 loss to Missouri. The two previous losses were without star Blake Griffin, but Griffin was present Wednesday night and it still was not enough for Oklahoma to come out with a win. One of the country’s most dominant teams for much of the season appears to be headed in the wrong direction heading into the most significant part of the season

9. Michigan State Spartans (24-5)
Michigan State has a huge 3 game advantage in the Big Ten and they have already wrapped up the regular season title. The Spartans have won 4 straight games after their win over Indiana on Tuesday night. However, many are wondering how the Spartans will fair against the out of conference competition due to inconsistent play this season.

10. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (23-5)
Wake Forest fell off the map after their 16-0 start as they struggled through the first half of conference play. However, the Demon Deacons are back to playing solid basketball and have won 5 of their last 6 games with their only loss to Duke. Jeff Teague is averaging 20 points per game and Wake Forest will still be a dangerous team in the post season.

Louisville has only two conference losses. If Pitt beats Uconn and UofL beats WVU, Louisville will be the outright winner of the Big East.
